I always had a bit of an uneasy feeling when my son and I read Rainbow Fish, but you've done an excellent job pin-pointing the conflicting messages. Definitely a case in point for talking about a book's meaning with your children!

Thanks for the great review.

Sidenote: My mom teaches preschool and kindergarten. She actually uses this book (I think there's a sequel too) and a 'Rainbow Fish' toy in her class.

I've never read it, but she loves the story :)

Interesting dilemma... (Reply to this comment)

I think the mixed messages are the BEST thing about the book, really - as long as parents are made aware of them (which you've helped to do!) and help their children think about them, and discuss them openly.

Thanks for bringing up both the good and the bad of the book - and an insightful, thoughtful review! You've made my mind up about picking up a copy for my son (my daughter wore hers out - and kids' books aren't cheap). She loved it so much, and it IS nearly Christmas as I write this... ;-)

I'm re-reading Bruno Bettelheim's "The Uses of Enchantment" (Reply to this comment)

right now. He suggests that stories that can be interpreted in different ways are good for children, because such stories provide children with an outlet for their own emotional conflicts. Fables that simply "teach a lesson" are too restricting. It'd be great to read this story with you child and then ask them what THEY think of it. The meaning can actually change as the child grows older.
