Rainbow 6 is a person, not a group. Rainbow 6 runs Rainbow, a top secret multi-national anti-terrorist group, not unlike the Green Berets. The two teams that are trained in the book are made up of former FBI, SAS, Green Berets and so on. Even though this group is top secret, high level terrorists manage to find out about it, and manage to kidnap Rainbow 6’s wife, daughter, and unborn grandchild. The terrorists are eventually apprehended, and the womenfolk of Rainbow 6 return home safe and sound.
The above storyline is only one of at least three different intertwined stories in Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy. This story is very engrossing, as the reader is omnipotent, and knows all of the information regarding the terrorists, Rainbow, and the governments, even though none of these three organisations can piece toether the information until the end. The switching between the different viewpoints is seamless, and it often fills in information that is not present in the other viewpoints. Each and every character is used to their full extent in the story (unlike the Russian hired assassins in Net Force), and like other Clancy books, nobody of any importance is killed.
The only major downside to this story is that it is incredibly long. At nearly 900 pages (paperback version), this is the longest novel that I’ve read so far (maybe I’ll try War and Peace next...), and even though the book is interesting, it may get tedious for some people to read about the planning for the terrorist actions for 200 pages, even though it is pretty interesting for a person like me who is somewhat interested in military planning and equipment. Also, while this story is not slow paced in any sense of the word, it still feels slower than some other Clancy books, namely Patriot Games and Politika, which run at frenetic paces.
This is for those Clancy fans that love Clancy’s books, but dislike the relatively shallow story. At least for me, this was a good read for a Chicago to China plane flight and back. Those 40 hours only ground out half of the book :).
