| cmaw63's Full Review: Rainbow Sorbet Floribunda Rose |
I love a colorful garden. Purple, red, orange, yellow and pink flowers can be found throughout my yard. In one area three of those colors can be found on one plant. The colors are deep and vibrant, demanding a garden visitor's attention.
About Rainbow Sorbet This rose was bred by Ping Lim and introduced in 2006. It can also be found by its registration name BAIprez. Rainbow Sorbet is a floribunda that is cold hardy to zone 5, zone 4 with winter protection.
The blooms are approximately 3 to 3 and 1/2 inches with 15 to 18 petals. It flowers throughout the growing season on long stems suitable for cutting arrangements. The overall plant height is around 5 feet. The foliage is a medium to dark green and healthy as this plant has good disease resistance, especially to black spot.
Finally, I found a rose that does what "they" say it should. In my zone 5 garden Rainbow Sorbet only gets into the four foot range. But, it is on the plus side so I will round up to five. The foliage does stay healthy other than a major outbreak of black spot I had last year that affected it mildly. A few treatments of Immunex Plus had it back in shape within a few weeks.
What I did find surprising during my research for this review was that some report this plant as having only pink and yellow in the blooms. Others, in my experience, more accurately state it has pink, orange and yellow. The center is a deep lemon yellow flowing into orange. The outer edges are a glowing hot pink. The flowers definitely do not know the meaning of subtle. Even in the hottest part of summer the colors do not fade. I will admit that at times the colors get a little overwhelming. So, I made sure its neighboring plants are a neutral, solid color; white, peach, yellow.
As I have found with most, not all, colorful roses there is no scent.
This is the third year Rainbow Sorbet has been in my yard. It has survived the Illinois winters without a bit of protection. Since I live in the country with no wind blocks shielding my yard I find that pretty impressive. It does die back to about six inches above the ground though. This year I cut it back in late April. By early June it had already had its first flush. And, it will continue to bloom until the first frost.
If you are looking for a colorful plant to add to your garden I can, and will, recommend the Rainbow Sorbet. It is a healthy, easy to grow rose, only needing water and a bit of fertilizer. What more could you ask for from a rose?
The picture on my Epinions profile page shows a bloom from the first year it was in my yard.
