This workbook is a remarkable companion/follow-up to the book Raising Your Spirited Child or will provide immense help on its own.
More!
From the point of birth – for some as early as conception – some children are more intense, persistent, sensitive, perceptive, and more uncomfortable with change! Perhaps they are even hard to get onto any kind of schedule. They may exhibit an incredibly high energy level. Their first reaction to anything new may be a rapid withdrawal or a resounding no!!! only to see them fully participate when warmed up. Are they analytical and always have a suggestion for change? Not all of the aforementioned characteristics need be present. However if these mannerisms sound familiar you may be parenting a spirited child. ****I am not referring to a religious form of spirit.**** Some people are familiar with this term others have heard the term strong willed. Mary Sheedy Kurcinka coined the term ‘Spirited’ in 1979 after the birth of her son Joshua. Prior the terms commonly associated with these children ranged within difficult, strong willed, stubborn, or Dennis the Menace.
Both of my girls are well mannered so please don’t let your thought pattern sway to visions of disobedience. We recognize the innate traits they possess and work with them so they can succeed without squelching their inner being. I was exceptionally excited to acquire the book Raising Your Spirited Child (http://www.epinions.com/book_mu-4704160) and soon after purchased the workbook. Although either publication will contribute a wealth of knowledge and help, I suggest purchasing both. Educators will benefit from these books also.
Raising Your Spirited Child Workbook
By: Mary Sheedy Kurcinka
Within this workbook you receive format much like the classroom layout used by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka within her classroom sessions. This remarkable woman has more than twenty years experience in early childhood education and is the founder of the Spirited Child workshops. She provides an abundant serving of helpful guidance for positive parenting principles with regard to raising spirited children. We are shown parent-tested strategies that provide massive insight and incredible support. If you are unable to attend the seminars offered by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka this workbook is the next best thing. The 300+ pages of this publication show us skills for recognizing the trigger points for explosion avoidance. The favorable strategies exhibited are easily applicable within the home.
After completing this workbook my awareness of what triggered temper flare-ups from my children soared. When I gained helpful insight of their temperament traits I became more aware of helpful ways to assist them toward destressing. Because I previously had digested the contents of Raising Your Spirited Child the principles presented were familiar and accepted. This book provided refreshment of concept and a blueprint for successful implementation of positive mannerisms grasped.
Exercises, observations, dialogue from actual groups, and parental testimonies offer insightful guidance. My husband and I acquired an increased appreciation for the innate personality traits that our daughters maintain. Diagrams and such aided us by showing us the traits of all family members – introvert versus extrovert. Temperament traits were explained, examples provided, and we diagramed our children’s. After you gauge the degree of each trait you will have a score that allows you to know if your child exhibits an overall temperament of cool, spunky or spirited. Most importantly we learn ways that we can encourage our children to see their temperament traits as positives and channel them fruitfully.
Temperament Traits
Intensity
Persistence
Sensitivity
Perceptiveness
Adaptability
Regularity
Energy
We began to realize the cues indicative toward the possibility of raised temper and were able to redirect them with deep breathing, humor, change of scenery, exercise, or repetitive motion. These strategies curtailed the stress reaction emitted from them. Because we had taken the time to pencil out their traits and closely examined the particulars we became more alert to possible triggers and gleaned incredible understanding for the reactions they put off.
Other valuable insight we gleaned:
-Increased understanding of environmental preference.
-Important transition steps.
-Increased appreciation for innate difference in temperament of each family member.
I encourage you to join with other parents of Spirited Kids:
