| smallie's Full Review: Ranger Cherokee 217 |
Purchased this boat new in 2001 and have been very pleased with it for both tournament fishing and recreational fishing.I looked around at a ton of fiberglass boats and was astounded at the price tags. Buying a used boat had its risks so that was not an option at the time. I knew Ranger was known for their quality and the price on this boat was attractive enough to lure me over to an aluminum rig. The front casting deck is extremely wide and the extension-deck option makes it even bigger. The more room the better on the front deck as far as I'm concerned. In fact, during our club tourneys all the boats are lined up on the beach and the Cherokee is the widest by far!! Even next to a Comanche. The bench seat that came with the boat is comfortable but pales in comparison to the improved version of later years (before Ranger ended production of the Cherokee) yet fits two adults comfortably. Livewells on both decks offer plenty of space with a decent aeration system. Dual rod lockers and plenty of storage in both the compartments and under the extension deck provide for clutter-free fishing. I've had this boat for almost 3 seasons now and the finish still looks good and can be cleaned quite easily with warm water and soap. Boat came rigged with a 90 Johnson and I would have liked to get a 125hp on the back seeing that it's max rated for a 130hp.
With two adults and gear and the 90 hp, the Cherokee can push almost 50mph. Too bad Ranger stopped making them, but if you can find one, rest assured it's a solid boat. (Crestliner's line of boats can now offer a similar quality package in a bass boat).
