Ratatouille --- A new PIXAR cartoon about culinary rats in Paris

Jan 5, 2008

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:very good message, great animation, funny scenes, good story

Cons:not quite enough heart

The Bottom Line: This is the perfect film for a young audience, because it blends talking animals with a story that has a good message about following your dreams.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

Remy is a young rat who has been living in France with his family and colony of rats in the house of an elderly woman. While most of them are fine eating crumbs and digging through the garbage for food, Remy has a pallet designed for must more sophisticated foods. It leads to an interest in cooking, and a love for one specific cookbook that he finds in the kitchen of their "host". The book is called "Anyone Can Cook", written by a famous chef in France by the name of Auguste Gusteau. Remy immediately gains a respect for Gusteau, and takes it to heart that anyone can cook, even a rat that has just recently become interested in the culinary arts. This ends up ruining their stay in the house though, as one day the woman finds him in the kitchen, and through the chase, discovers the entire colony.

While escaping from the house, Remy is separated from his family, and finds himself lost in a sewer that takes him to the underground of Paris. Fighting the fear to emerge on to the streets, he finds himself near the restaurant that his favorite cook actually helped to create. Through probably a combination of loneliness and fan-fare for the cook, Remy starts imagining that Gusteau is actually speaking with him, and leading him to go to the restaurant. When he gets there, he discovers a whole new world of tastes and smells that could alter how he approaches life. Now he wants nothing more than to be able to cook in this famous kitchen, and when he crosses paths with a new employee named Linguini, who is trying to find a place for himself, the pair could turn Paris on its head by creating mouth watering dishes that people everywhere could enjoy.

A lot of the intended humor of the film involves rats doing things that are out of the ordinary, and more human than anything else. One of the main ways the creators try to create some humor is the way that Remy helps Linguini to cook, and that is by sitting on his head under his hat, and pulling his hair to control his limbs. A little far-fetched, but necessary in order to develop the story that Remy is cooking through Linguini and that the marriage between the motives of the two characters is what really progresses the story. Remy is trying to prove that he can be more than just a rat, while Linguini is proving that he can be more than just a dishwasher that has to stay in the backroom of the kitchen. At its heart, the story has a good message about striving to be more than the role you are given, and it does a good job at presenting a good story about perseverance and how hard work can really pay off in the end.

Ratatouille is one of those animated films that keeps your attention, and strives to give a good message for its intended younger viewers. It does have a few funny moments, and the 111 minutes just seem to fly by in a non-threatening and at most times enjoyable fashion. There are however some things that the film was missing, primarily that of endearing moments or characters. Sure there are some interesting ones, but they aren't given room to really stretch beyond the obvious, and the film just felt like it was missing something when it came to an end. It may also be a bit too predictable for some viewers, and I think that the older the audience member, the less likely you are to really enjoy this film. Geared perfectly for a young audience, that is who I strongly recommend the film for, but for everyone else, this one only gets a mild recommendation.
