bellgirl's Full Review: Ratchet Clank Size Matters for PlayStation 2
Well, Insomniac games did it again! They created a masterpiece of a game. I am a huge fan of light hearted yet tough role playing games. I don't want to see blood or deal with dark scenes. R&C gives my exactly what I was looking for. After the fiasco of Spyro 4 (which was not made by Insomniac by the way) I was hoping there would be a new game out there to keep me up at night. BINGO! R&C does it.
Ratchet is a cat like being who teams up with Clank, a tiny robot.Their mission? Save the worlds of course. Not world, but worlds. 18 in total. That's a lot to explore. Not only that, you can earn bolts by smashing boxes and killing enemies. With these bolts you can buy weapons and ammo.
The most impressive weapon is the R.Y.N.O (rip ya a new one)! This thing is a killer but is not my favorite. My favorite is the Glove Of Doom. Throw a sphere from this glove and small robots emerge and kill anything within sight. You can sit back and let them do the work. I also liked the Devastator. It had excellent distance and was pretty darn accurate. It kept me out of trouble many times.On top of all these fun weapons you can buy or acquire from doing a task, you also get other gadgets. There is a metal detector for finding bolts in the ground, a Trsspasser to open locked doors, swingshot to soar to hard to reach places, and many, many other devices.
The gameplay is pretty simple. Walk around kill the enemies, perform certain tasks and discover secrets. The most useful thing about the game was the maps. It was a real help in finding out where I've been and where I need to go. I would have been lost without it. It's a great tool.
Once you get the flow of the game, you'll find yourself loving every minute of it. I have one hint though. To get the RYNO you have to earn 150,000 bolts. This can be a tedious task, esp. if you finished the game except for beating the boss. My advice, if you have kids, let them play your game. I was way ahead of them when I told them that they could play my game if they earn me bolts. The kids jumped at the idea. They had fun exploring places they haven't gotten to and I didn't have to run through the planets over and over. I was getting boring. But the kids did it! Their reward? They got to see me beat Drek. With the RYNO it took only minutes.
This game is one of the best games I've played. Spyro the Dragon ranks first, but this game is second. I cannot wait for the next one to come out.
