Ratchet and Clank is one of the best platform games on the Playstation 2. From the makers of Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet and Clank's huge free-roaming levels and great gameplay rank it up with Jak and Daxter as the 3D platform games that are head and shoulders above the rest. It puts a new spin on the platform genre, by including all the weapons and gadgets. It almost has the feel of a third person shooter.
The levels in Ratchet and Clank are each a different planet that the duo must travel in order to do something or get something. Each planet is different with its own scenery, enemies, and atmosphere. The levels are very large and very detailed and a lot of fun to explore and play around in.
There are close to 40 different types of weapons and gadgets that you will buy or receive and each one is a lot of fun to try out. The weapons in the game are quite creative, for example there is the Morphoray which turns your enemies into a chicken, the Suck Cannon which sucks your enemies into the gun and then shoots them out at other enemies, and the RYNO which stands for "Rip Ya a New One". The gadgets in the game are used for solving the many puzzles and mini games in the game. There was obviously a lot of thought and planning put into the way the weapons and gadgets work with each level. You have to learn how to use them and when to use them because each level and enemy is different.
The graphics in Ratchet and Clank are very good. The scenery is breathtaking, when you arrive on each planet you have to take a minute and look around at the world you have just arrived in. There are often many ships flying around overhead or a huge city, it reminds me of a Star Wars scene. The animations are also very good such as when Ratchet swings his wrench or the recoil when he fires a weapon. The cut scenes are also very good and a lot of them are very humorous. They keep the storyline going and keep the game interesting. The only hitch in graphics that I noticed was when you are being attacked by a lot of enemies at the same time the framerate can suffer, its nothing major but it is noticable.
The controls are very good and responsive as well. Whether you are fighting hand-to-hand with your wrench or shooting up some enemies the control is quick and accurate. There are lots of moves and jumps that Ratchet can pull off to dodge weapon fire or get to where he needs to be such as the wall jump or long jump, he can also do a side jump to dodge a missile. These are easy to do and will become second nature when you learn how to play.
There are many levels which will provide many hours of gameplay. During the game there are many secret areas that will make you want to explore the levels even more. In addition to this there are 40 Gold Bolts that are hidden throughout the levels that you will want to collect so you can buy gold weapons after you beat the game. I spent a lot of time making my way back though the levels to try and find all the gold bolts. Also there are 30 skill points (much like the skill points from Spyro) that will keep you playing for a long time. Skill points are kind of random things that you do in each level such as shoot down some transport ships or beat a boss with only your wrench. These goodies make you want to keep playing and exploring the huge levels to find out where to get them.
