A recent move put our family in a position to change satellite service providers, and with the screaming introductory deal we received from DirecTV, and the so-so customer service we had with Dish Network (more on this in another article), we thought we'd give the new guys a try.
Installation was a piece of cake, the helpful people from the local satellite installation company were quick and professional, explaining all of the features of the D11 receiver. We decided to go with this unit, which does not have the digital video recording features, due to some other problems we had with the DVR system (again, more in another article) with Dish Network.
Actual use? Well, there's some issues. I got used to the Dish Network's "view subscribed" feature. Since I purchased the basic package (50 or so channels, no premium), I was expecting to only be able to see the channels I purchased. DirecTV will show you all of them, but will only let you know if a channel is not available when you actually try and tune into it. Marketing at its best, maybe, but not something I enjoy. DirecTV is also much more dependent on a dedicated phone line than is Dish Network. We chose not to plug the phone line in due to some problems with our other unit (again with the other article!), and so PPV movies are out.
Still, for what you pay for, the D11 receiver does the job well, if "frills free". A good starter system for the satellite novice, it's well worth upgrading to Tivo or the satellite equivalent.
