| Freak369's Full Review: Rayovac Hello Kitty Flashlight |
One of the coolest things Annabelle got for her birthday was a Hello Kitty flashlight. This might seem like an unusual thing to buy for a kid but she went bonkers when she got it. When she opened it and tried it out she got a huge smile on her face, No more monster! and let out a little cackle. The house [which I often call the money pit] is old and makes some rather strange noises - most of which happen at night. Wind rushes through the windows that havent been replaced, floorboards squeak and creak and then theres the hot water tank that makes a rather frightening noise that the overpriced repairman said is normal. While shes adjusted to the house and surrounding over the past few months, some of these noises send her shrieking down the halls, straight into my bedroom. We went through night lights, kid themed flashlights like the Eveready Disney Waterproof Flashlight and others like my beloved Mini Maglite but none seemed to help her get over her hearing the noises like this one.
Rayovac Hello Kitty Flashlight
The color of this is what makes it so awesome, its a shimery light pink - the perfect color for little girls! Its got the Hello Kitty logo on the side of it with a couple of cute graphics of her and several small flowers. The graphics are stenciled on so eventually they will wear off but so far it still looks as good as the day Annabelle received it. This comes with a pink wrist cord so they can toted it anywhere and you wont to worry about them losing or dropping it. This size is great for when kids go trick or treating and you want them to have a flashlight with them but not that huge one you keep in the kitchen and yes, I already checked, it fits perfectly inside those standard plastic pumpkin pails! The wrist cord can be removed and reattached if they dont like it or if its getting in the way of things, a nice touch by Rayovac. Since this takes two AA sized batteries the overall size of this is small - its thick enough that kids will be able to get a firm grip on it but not so thick they will have trouble holding on to it.
This comes carded [attached to cardboard] along with two AA sized batteries, Rayovac of course. You can get a lot of shine time from the batteries that come with it and so far I have only had to replace them once. This doesnt have a safety feature to prevent kids from getting into the battery compartment so if you have a younger Hello Kitty fan you will want to make sure that they either dont see you opening this or that you explain to them that batteries arent a toy and they shouldnt open it. The amount of use you get from the batteries depends on the type you purchase and how often its used. The overall make of the flashlight is awesome and will withstand a lot of use and abuse before it cracks or breaks. Annabelle dropped this down a flight of steps [hard wood steps mind you] and I think it hit each and every one of them along the way - but when it hit the bottom it was still shining bright which prompted her to run down to get it then run back up the steps and try it again. Needless to say, she gave it a true test and was still working perfectly.
This makes for a nice flashlight for little girls, especially ones that have outgrown the larger bulkier ones that are made for younger kids like the My First Flashlight. Since its only six inches long they can toss it in their backpacks if they are going to a slumber party or want to have something with them if they are going to be outside at night. This isnt waterproof but when we got caught in a light rainstorm, Hello Kitty didnt seem to mind. One thing I do want to mention is that this does come with two batteries, some places like Amazon.com
are listing this as an item that doesnt come with batteries. Unless Rayovac has changed the way they are packaging this, consider this an error in advertising. The ones that I saw at Target were all carded and came with the two AA sized batteries inside the package.
The Bottom Line
Annabelle likes this a little more than the Hello Kitty lantern that she received for her birthday but when she is out in the backyard catching fireflies at night or frogs at dusk she likes using the lantern because she can put it on the ground or hang it off of a branch and it throws off more light. Thats not to say that this isnt bright but this is when you want a more direct path of light than something that is going to light up a larger area. So far she hasnt had any problems with this, its easy to turn off and on and the wrist cord lets her swing it around and act silly with it without me having to worry about ducking or running for cover if she loses her grip on it. You can find these for three to four dollars and while that might seem like a lot for a small flashlight, you are paying for the Rayovac and Sanrio name on it ... but if it makes a little girl [or a big girl] smile then its worth it!
As always, thanks for the read!
