You Light Up My Night

Seems sturdily made
Cons:May not help Light sleepers.
Though a RayoVAC, doesn't vacuum
The Bottom Line: For me this was a slam dunk purchase and as satisfying as my favorite potato dish.
I bought this light to add to my arsenal of lighting in preparation for the next power outage. Last summer we had one that lasted for a week, so I want to have plenty of portable lighting and not have to use candles. The Rayovac Sportsman Xtreme promises bright light and up to 150 hours use on three D cell batteries. (on the low setting) It certainly seemed worth a try and might be a boon to me on dark nights.

The lantern is quite small with a 3 inch base and a 7 inch height, yet its bright light output belies its size. For experimentation I illuminated a windowless 14 by 14 foot room that had no windows with this lamp and was impressed by the powerful light output. One can definitely use this lantern to read by on the high setting. On the lower setting one can still read but only if near the lantern and not as comfortably.
Except for the flimsy plastic hook on the bottom of the unit, the lantern is ruggedly constructed and should last a very long time. I can't foresee ever using that bottom hook so it's a nonissue for me. Installing the D batteries (3) was easy - something I did without reading the directions on the lantern's insert. To replace the battery cover, just line up the two red arrow and turn the cover a quarter turn to the right. Simple.
For comparison I also lit up the windowless room with a 24 LED rechargeable lantern of unknown brand or origin. Both lights are bright, but for lighting a room the Rayovac is superior because its light is brighter and it illuminates 360 degrees. Taking off the translucent plastic cover adds even more lumens, but looking at the bare bulb can hurt your eyes. I'd only resort to this if I could hang the Rayovac from the ceiling.
I'm not looking forward to a power outage to give this Rayovac a real test. In the meantime I'm using it when walking the dogs at night. The Rayovac works wonderfully for that purpose and it's easy to carry with its convenient, rubberized handle that provides plenty of room for gripping even for the largest of hands. Carrying this lantern by its handle, I was amazed by the large expanse of Spud Acres that this lantern illuminated. The 360 degree brilliance is much nicer than the limited range of our flashlights.
In short. I'm very pleased with my purchase of this Rayovac Lantern and have no buyer's remorse.
