Pros:Cool look, nice feeling keys, sweet backlighting and fast response times.

Cons:Takes 2 usb ports, software interface too small, price, dust and finger print magnet.

The Bottom Line: If you don't mind spending $80 and want a pretty cool gaming keyboard, go for it.

If you're into PC gaming then you are quite familiar with Razer and their production of superior quality and performance mice to exploit your enemy to the fullest.

Razer has, recently, expanded their product line to include gaming keyboards. The Lycosa is there second entry in this product line; the first being the Tarantula.

What separates this keyboard from the other gaming keyboards? Well not much, in my opinion. But it does offer some interesting features that are noteworthy.

Keyboard keys: They are very close to the look and feel of a laptop key. The stroke travel length is quite short and with Razer's Ultrapolling technology they claim there is only a 1 nanosecond delay. This is great for a gamer...no lag. I like the feel and there's minimal noise from key presses.

Backlighting: Yes it has it and unfortunately it needs it. If you turn off the backlighting there is no way to read the letters/numbers on the keys. If you are proficient in typing then this is probably not a big deal but I would think Razer could have used a better design on key labelling. If you need turn the backlighting off you are hard-pressed to make out the key labels even in a lit room. But with them on and it dark in the room (like most gamers prefer) they really show up nicely. The only drawback is you have 3 setting for backlighting: On, Off or the WASD cluster lit. That's it! Too bad Razer didn't offer an option of adjusting the intensity of the lighting like the Saitek Eclipse series keyboards.

Touchpad for multimedia: Gone are the toggle keys for turning up and down the volume. The multimedia duties have been replaced with a touchpad that sits in the upper right hand corner of the keypad. This is kinda cool! You can pause, play, fast forward, got back (rewind,), stop, backlight options and adjust the volume. The only drawback to this feature is sometimes you can turn the backlighting off when you are adjusting the volume due to the sensitivity of the touchpad and the proximity of the "keys" to one another. In addition, if you want to turn off the Windows Key just press the Razer logo and at the same time press the Windows key to deactivate it. Nice touch as it really is inconvenient to hit the Windows key during your game and go to desktop.

The driver/software that comes with the keyboard is not optional. You need to install it as your keyboard will either not work at all or will work but behave erratically.

The driver/software has a lot of features built in but you need your binoculars to see it as the interface is quite small. Not sure why Razer made it so small...there's plenty of room on the screen that they could have made it a bit larger.

A very unique feature with this keyboard is you can program any key you want through this interface. Although I feel it's impractical, some may find this feature really appealing. If you were to need to bind a macro or two or three to some keys, this keyboard will allow you to pick virtually any key you wish.

Another great feature is Razer's anti-ghosting technology that is included with this keyboard. This allows you to push up to 10 keys simultaneously without error. Most standard keyboards will cause a lockup or squeaking from the pc speaker when 3 or more buttons are pushed simultaneously.

Other things (good and bad) that the Lycosa offers are a 2.0 usb port and a mic and headphone jack on the back of the keyboard. This is good because to use this keyboard you need two available usb ports on your computer. At least they give one back but I wish they would have included two ports (like the Tarantula). And plugging high drain usb devices like an external hard drive could cause you to get the "not enough power" error message. I tried to plug in my Death Adder to this port but it didn't work. I was successful in getting a usb jump drive to work as well as my ipod, though.

The finish is a sleek sexy black piano look but it shows every single bit of dust and fingerprints and almost acts like a magnet for them. Constant cleaning maintenance will be required if you have a hangup for these types of things.

All in all, I like the keyboard and think it performs very well. The big drawback is the price for what you do get. If Razer makes a few improvements to their driver/software, some of the minor negatives (I would hope) could be fixed.
