Gaming at its Core

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Solid unit, Quick Installation, Very Fast and Responsive, Feels Great to the Touch

Cons:No Macro Keys, Lack of Extra Options, Keys Not Distinguishable Without Backlight

The Bottom Line: If you don't need extra screens or keys, or want an office-usable keyboard, get the Lycosa!  You'll be glad you did

The Razer Lycosa is meant to be the gaming keyboard that you want to use over and over again.  Depending on your play-style, this unit will leave you more than satisfied.

My Lycosa came to me as a refurbished unit in December 2008 thanks to my wife's listening.  Immediately I discovered a few minor issues with the keyboard which happen to fall under preferential usage.  The USB port on the keyboard is a separate cable that is not powered outside of what is supplied from the USB hub on your system.  This may have been expected, but fortunately leaves little concern for me.  The microphone and headphone jacks are 3.5mm jacks for ease of installation, but would require the user to constantly connect and disconnect their speakers if they do not always use headphones, so these fell to disuse.  These issues aside, I was very happy with the keyboard overall.  The raisers at the back of the keyboard offer a slight lift to this very slim keyboard, and moreso if you remove the palm-rest.  The size of the keyboard was actually a slight percentage smaller than the stock keyboard that came with my computer, so it takes very little real estate on the desktop or keyboard drawer.  I was surprised at the tactile feel to the keys.  Understanding that they were rubberized, I was not expecting the sensory security that came from each individual key press!  When you hit the keys, you know it, as they will keep a slight grip and prevent slipping to the next key.  The key press itself is very light and feels almost like an extended laptop keyboard's travel.  If you prefer the deep press or sound that comes from the older, IBM-style keyboards, you are not going to enjoy this unit at all.  The keys themselves are NOT laptop-style keys as they still use the center contact styling of the standard keyboard, just with half the depth.  Typing with the Lycosa, I found that it is very silent compared with my stock HP unit, even when pressing quickly and a little harder than I should.  The keys are very responsive, a great plus when trying to cast that spell or switch weapons quickly.

The Lycosa's Media functions are usable but feel slightly limited.  It has the standard Stop/Play/Pause/FFwd/Rev presses as well as Volume Up and Down on the touchpad to the upper right of the keyboard, but no Mute key.  It also has a light control key which has three settings:  Off, WASD cluster, and on.  With the design of the keyboard, though, you'll most likely be working with the lighting either full on or full off as the keycaps are very dark and make seeing the letters difficult at best and downright impossible at the worst.

As with all Razer products, the drivers were easily available through their website.  Being a Windows 7 Beta tester at the time, I was a little concerned with functionality with or without the drivers.  Fortunately, the standard Microsoft drivers WILL run this keyboard.  It makes more sense to use the official drivers from Razer, though, as it does bring the additional features, such as game profiles and macros, to the unit.  The download was not massive and the installation was reasonably quick.  The only downfall that I came across was the lack of Macro Keys.  You can program a macro to run on any key, but there are no additional keys strictly for macros.  If you're a heavy macro-user, then you may want to consider looking elsewhere unless you have keys that you never use since this keyboard does not offer the additional slots.

Over the course of the year, though, I have run across what may be an isolated issue with my Lycosa: Key-stick.  The one serious problem I have with the keyboard showed up a week into using it.  Basically, a random key will lock into an actuated position, although NOT physically.  The key will still press but it will not stop the repeated keystroke.  Once it does stop, the key will not insert the character at all.  The only repair is to pull the USB from the computer, let it register as disconnected, then reconnect the keyboard.  After doing so, the unit will operate normally until the next random press.  This has happened over two Lycosas and multiple OS installations on my desktop, so this may be my own hardware glitching.

In conclusion:
My opinion of the Razer Lycosa is this: If you want a gaming keyboard that fits well in almost any place a stock keyboard will fit without all the massive bells, whistles, or preferential add-ons, this will make you very happy.  It has its own little quirks to learn here and there, and has its issues for the more rapid-access-oriented players, but if you're not the "Uber-Leet Hardcore" player, you can not go wrong with the Razer Lycosa.
