Wanna Know What Gets Me Wet? [My Contact Lenses That Is] ReNu Lubricating Rewetting Drops
Written: Nov 16 '03
Pros:Easy to use bottle, small size makes it truly portable.
Cons:Expensive, hard to tell exactly how much is left in the bottle.
The Bottom Line: Tired, dry or sore eyes? Give ‘em a boost with ReNu Lubricating and Rewetting Drops
Over the years I have used a variety of rewetting and lubrication products for my contact lenses. For a long time I swore by the Bausch & Lomb name and refused to try any other product. Necessity being the mother of invention, I switched to Alcon Clerz Plus Lens Drops when my local drug store was out of the Bausch & Lomb brand. This past week it was the reverse situation, the Alcon brand was out of stock due to a sale so I switched back to the ReNu version. Knowing that I desperately needed some type of rewetting drop I picked up a bottle of the ReNu and moved on with my shopping. Ive gotten rather laxed with my eye care products and no longer stay loyal to one single brand, if the ingredients are the same and its three dollars less, its good enough for me.
ReNu Lubricating and Rewetting Drops
If you are new to wearing contact lenses or have never used a rewetting drop, Ill be completely honest most of the drops are the same. The exceptions are the ones that are make for specific conditions or are fee of certain chemicals. Unless you are working at a computer terminal 12 hours a day or working in the middle of a desert, these drops should work perfectly when you have a case of dry eye. This product will not remove calcium or protein deposits nor will it clean the lens, this is strictly for rewetting and lubrication [hence the name of the product]. These are easy to use and provide a few hours of relief when you have dry or itchy eyes but if you are experiencing an ongoing situation, its best to call your eye care provider to see if there is another issue to consider. Also, if you have ever had any allergic reactions to eye care products, do a little research before you purchase this to make sure you can use it without any side effects.
I spend a good bit of time in front of the computer and tend to get dry eyes easily from it. A few drops of this solution and a couple of blinks and I am good for at least an hour or so. Since we live a hop, skip and a jump from the beach my eyes get a beating from the wind and sand not to mention the huge temperature changes that happen. Theres no stinging or discomfort from using the drops but it can be a little messy the first few times you use it. If you were any type of eye liner or eye make up, you will want to have a bottle of this on hand since these types of products do a real number on lenses. My usual method of application is to turn my head to the side slightly, look away from the bottle and apply the drops but when I know that I will need a little more I pull out my bottom eyelid [gross but effective] and apply the drops that way. The real key to having success with these drops is to blink several times but not quickly or all you will be doing is blinking out the solution.
Price & Size
So far I have only been able to find this in the .27 ounce sized bottle that runs about $4.00 - $5.00. That might sound steep for such a small amount but you get a tremendous amount of use from each bottle. You should only be using a few drops at a time so if you need to use more than that, you might want to check with your eye care professional to see if there is an issue with your lenses or fit. You can see if your optometrist has professional samples of the ReNu Lubricating and Rewetting Drops that you can try out. These are small bottles [0.1 ounce] and will last you a few weeks if you use them on a regular basis. A few online contact lens sites will send you samples of the product if you request them or as perks for being a repeat customer.
Things To Know
This product comes with several anti tampering devices and if any of them seem to be broken, do not use it and return it for a replacement. As with al contact lens products, make sure your hands are clean and never touch the tip of the bottle to any surface or directly on the lens or eye surface. These usually have a shelf life of about sixteen months and the expiration date is printed on both the bottle and the box that it comes in [except the sample size that comes without a box but does have a plastic band around the neck]. As I said, if you are curious about this product but are currently using something else, check with your eye care center to see if they have any samples they can give you. I have used this off and on for several years and have never had any allergic reactions to it but that doesnt mean that you will have the same results. If you notice any redness, change in vision or pain discontinue using this and contact your eye care provider.
The Bottom Line
As I mentioned earlier, Ive sort of changed my attitude on contact lens care products. While I wont grab a generic brand of the shelf, these days what ever is on sale or is the best value is good enough for me as long sa the ingredients are the same. The ReNu Lubricating and Rewetting Drops are a great product that will help eliminate that scratchy feeling that can occur from time to time. Whether you wear daily, disposable or extended wear, these drops are formulated to provide quick and lasting relief. Be sure to read the manufacturer insert packaged with this product for information about using this product correctly, possible side effects and contact information. Be sure to read this and become familiar with the information, while the chance of an allergic reaction is small, it can happen and your best defense is knowledge and knowing how to react to the situation at hand.
As always, thanks for the read!
