mattypoo's Full Review: Reactionary by Face To Face (Punk)
I bought this CD off a few weeks ago, after hearing mixed reviews from friends who already owned it. In my opinion, Face to Face is one of the better punk bands around today, and I think Face to Face made an album that has its brighter moments, but overall is only slightly above average. Their first album, Don't Turn Away, was by far their best. And while Reactionary is far from mediocre, it probably could've been much better.
Originally, Face to Face posted 16 songs for download, and a poll determined which 12 would be on their new CD. Reactionary is a compilation of the top vote getters on that poll. However, one big weakness of Reactionary is its length: a whopping 37 minutes! If anything could have been done about the short length of this album, some extra tracks could've been added, which is why I don't understand why all 16 songs weren't used.
Face to Face's style is pretty similar to previous albums, not too many changes, while the music is pretty fast and uptempo. The music on Reactionary is pretty similar to the 1996 self titled album, simple guitars with not too many chord changes or complicated solos, good drumming, and really good bass. Still, while I think F2F's older stuff is a little more inventive, Reactionary is pretty easy to get into.
The lyrics to the songs are very similar to what F2F put out on their 1996 album: Pretty simple, pop-punkish, and slightly repetitive. I don't think they ever get irritating, but they are definitely geared to having more of a mass appeal. The songs are generally pretty easy listening, as far as punk music goes anyway, and pretty similar throughout. However if you are seeking deep and meaningful poetry, you won't find any on Reactionary.
I've always liked Trever Keith's voice, and it was a pleasant surprise when I found it actually seems to get better for this album. He even goes kind of nuts with a little scream/singing in Think For Yourself. In fact, the song itself is a departure from the rest of the CD, definitely a harder song than anything F2F has done in a while. I liked this song a lot, and I hope to see more like it on future records.
As a whole Reactionary was pretty much what I expected, although it could've used a little more creativity. If you already have Face to Face's other albums, or you want a punk CD that offers semi-fast songs, and works well for background music, get this CD. Otherwise, pick up Don't Turn Away or another earlier album because you'll probably like it better.
