I've spoken to a number of people who weren't as impressed with this book as they expected to be, based on the hype. Welcome to epinions. You did a nice job with this review. Just one typo though: "8 lunar months" is less than a year. I only know of one culture that allows girls aged 8 lunar months to get married, and that culture does not exist in Iran.

all the best,

Kate

Yes, and it's a shame. I only wish I could be a student of Nafisi's, like all those graduate students who didn't need the credits but sat in on her lectures anyway. But perhaps like all great books which just don't translate into great movies, one can't expect a memoir to be a substitute for live teaching.

I really had to struggle to finish this book, but I'm glad now that I did, because Azar Nafisi did me a big favour. Not that people are churlish enough to say to me 'Why read?' or 'Why bother reading fiction?' But it's always nice to have these great answers ready. :)

... of an intriguing book that, unfortunately, will probably not appeal to a great number of people.

you said...
"It's ultimately rewarding but I suspect many will not be prepared to invest the time and patience required."

In this day of 'express dating', 'super-size it' drive-thrus, and CliffsNotes . . .somehow I think that observation is absolutely spot on.

Very nicely done.
