Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

Red Hook is one of those horror/thriller movies that focuses a lot of attention on blood and gore, and pays very little attention to logic.  Sure, there's a story here, and it's even a reasonable one.  But the many plot holes and inconsistencies really bring this movie down.

Jenny (Christina Brucato) witnessed a horrible event when she was a child.  Now, a young adult, and understandably agoraphobic, Jenny has taken a huge step, bravely moving out on her own, attending college in New York City.  But life is difficult as she's viewed by the other students as a bit of oddball.  So, maybe a dorm-sponsored scavenger hunt is just what she needs - it'll give her a chance to make new friends and have some fun for a change.  Too bad the day of innocent fun won't be so innocent as the hunters have become the hunted.

This movie follows a very typical horror movie formula.  One by one the hunters go missing and we, the viewers, know they've met their demise.  The others aren't sure what's going on.  Is someone playing a sick joke on them, or are their friends really gone?  Only when first body parts, and then actual bodies start turning up do the remaining players realize the seriousness of their situation.  Of course, as there are fewer and fewer of them remaining, that leaves fewer and fewer suspects.  Who can they trust?  And who's turned a game into a deadly challenge?

Our killer seems to favor knives as his or her weapon of choice, so there are lots of scenes of blood and gore to satisfy those viewers who like that kind of thing.  

What the movie lacks, though, is logic.  It's just not a very intelligent movie - far too many times a character did something that made very little sense.  Or, they didn't do the one thing that might make sense - i.e., call for help.  There were also illogical moves made by the writer/director/editor.  Things like a character being dressed one way, then half a second later, dressed another way, with no explanation.  There was also a character who seemed to know far more than he/should have, without any explanation given as to how that knowledge was acquired.

In other words, the movie focused on horror and gore, and didn't worry about silly little details like the ones listed above. 

With decent performances, including a small role by Terrence Mann, this movie isn't all bad.  See if, if horror is your thing.  But don't look for a smart thriller; this isn't it.
