Pros:Inexpensive, lots of creative fun, easy to build
Cons:118 pieces isn't a lot, no step-by-step instructions
The Bottom Line: Redbox Builderific makes a great inexpensive construction set, similar to a plastic Erector set at a fraction of the price.
For Christmas my son had asked for a plastic Erector set, which I unfortunately forgot to order and were impossible to find in a store. When I happened upon Builderific 118 piece plastic construction set for only $10 I hoped it would be a reasonable substitution.

What You Get
This is a 118 piece plastic construction set that features screws, nuts and bolts to plastic strips, plates, L and U shaped brackets, wheels and a gear with handle. A double sided tool (wrench and screw driver) helps young builders put the pieces together. The included instruction sheet includes ideas for 19 models but no step by step instructions. The set comes in a sturdy cardboard box with snug fitting plastic lid and handle for easy carrying. Builderific is recommended for children ages 4 and up.
Considering the set was $10 at my local close our store I didn't have high hopes for this Builderific set. I was pleasantly surprised. Although this was a gift for my fiver year old son, his older sisters enjoy it as much as he does. They use the idea sheet as well as the box for ideas, like a working crane. They enjoy building their own creations as well like boats and cars or swords and shields. Construction is very easy. The screws, nuts and bolts can be twisted by hand only requiring the simple tool for a tighter fit. All of the pieces are tough but do have some give so they aren't going to snap easily even if bent to build one of the models.
I would not recommend Builderific as a first building toy. Without step by step instruction I can see some children not being able to copy the creations in the idea sheet, especially younger builders. We seem to have an inordinate number of different building toys in the house and my children never asked for help in interpreting any of the models. When I looked at the instruction sheet I didn't think they were particularly easy to follow for a building toy with a suggested age range starting at 4. However, for a 4 year old who would just be happy to attach pieces together with simple tools this set certainly can't be beat.
Redbox Builderific is a great easy to use construction set. There are lots of ideas but the set definitely lends itself to making anything you want but some may not like the lack of step-by-step instructions. While 118 pieces isn't enough for a large structure, it is enough to build several small toys at once. Definitely a great value.
