moonsista's Full Review: Redken All Soft Conditioner
I have to admit that until just the last three years or so, the shampoos and conditioners that I used were mainly drugstore brands. I experimented some with salon brands when I had extra money, but I was not convinced that salon brands were any better, and was afraid that I would just be throwing money down the drain if I used salon brands. Despite the fact that my mother and friends all had great luck using Matrix products, I resisted until my hair was just TOO dry for words, and I needed something better.
I switched to Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm, which worked well for me - for a while. At some point, I started to notice that it just stopped working for me and I needed something heavier and more moisturizing. After reading several good opinions on Redken All Soft Conditioner, and receiving a recommendation for this product from my stylist, I decided that I was going to give it a try.
Product Details:
The bottle of All Soft Conditioner that I purchased a few months ago is a light tan, rounded, plastic bottle that is 8" high with a tan push-down cap. However, Redken has changed the packaging and this product now comes in a bottle that looks completely different. The new bottle is still tan, but is square-ish and tapers to a narrow neck. The cap is black. You may find that your local salon does not yet have the new packaging. (Note to Redken: The new packaging you've put all your products in is very boring and too masculine-looking!)
Each bottle of All Soft Conditioner contains 8.5 fl. oz. of conditioner.
Redken has this to say about this product on their website: All Soft Conditioner smooths, detangles, nourishes and controls frizz for shiny, touchable hair.
Directions For Use (taken from bottle):After using All Soft Shampoo, apply and massage through hair. Rinse thoroughly.
I was a little skeptical at first when I got this conditioner home and read on the front of the bottle that this product "softens with avocado oil" - I thought that sounded very old-fashioned and too basic - how could this product possibly be good if it seems so old-fashioned and basic? Avocado oil? How original is that? I was not expecting much at this point.
All Soft Conditioner is a very thick, somewhat "globby" conditioner that is a light, peachy tan in color. The scent is different - not bad or unpleasant, but not floral or herbal or fruity. It doesn't have that expensive salon fragrance either. I would say it smells like a drugstore conditioner but without all the heavy perfumes.
I am still using up a HUGE, 33 oz. bottle of my Matrix Biolage Hydrating Shampoo, so I've been unable so far to use the All Soft Conditioner with its All Soft Shampoo. (I'm definitely trying the All Soft Shampoo when I'm done with the monster bottle of Matrix shampoo, which I've decided to also kick to the curb!)
The first time that I used All Soft Conditioner, I had trouble getting the product to dispense through the small opening in the bottle. That was the last time I tried that - I now screw the lid off and squeeze the conditioner out into my hand. This is because the conditioner is very thick and "globby".
It only takes a little bit of All Soft Conditioner to condition my shoulder-length hair. An amount about the size of a quarter is all it takes. I just dispense it into my hand, rub it into both hands, and work it into my hair. That's one of the good things about salon products - a little goes a long way.
The main problem I have with my hair is that it gets dry between cuts. I have had problems with heat damage (from blow-drying) in the past, and I think that all of the products I use in my hair contribute. My hair has always been prone to split ends as well. From the first time that I stopped using the Matrix Conditioning Balm and used the All Soft Conditioner instead, my hair felt significantly softer. I was very surprised that I felt such a difference after one use. Contributing to the fact that my hair was feeling soft was the fact that I had my hair cut about 3 or 4 weeks earlier, and my hair did not yet need to be trimmed.
I've been using All Soft Conditioner daily for about 6 weeks. I need a trim badly right now, but my hair is still soft and not dry-feeling. I thought that the moisture in this product would weigh down my curls, but that has not happened at all. I just have consistently soft, moisturized hair. My hair is easy to style and there is no residue left over from the conditioner at all.
As far as helping to control frizzies, I have not yet used this product in the humid summer heat yet (which is the only time my hair gets frizzy). We've had unseasonably chilly and rainy weather so far this summer and I haven't had to deal with frizz yet.
All Soft Conditioner de-tangles my hair nicely - way better than drugstore brands, and about the same as the Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm. My hair is very tangled in the mornings (I look like Medusa), so a shampoo that de-tangles well is important to me.
I have been extremely satisfied with All Soft Conditioner and will continue to use it. In 6 weeks, I have used about 2/3 of my first bottle. Needless to say, I'm happy with how little of the product I have to use to get results. I can't wait to see how my hair looks and feels when I use All Soft Conditioner in conjunction with the All Soft Shampoo.
I want to also say that another Redken product that I use, Active Express Quick Treat, has cut down significantly on the amount of heat damage that has occurred to my hair. The combination of the Active Express Quick Treat and the All Soft Conditioner has really helped my hair to be less dry and very soft for the past few months - making the trip to the salon less urgent.
Price and Purchasing Information:
Redken products are available only in salons. However, we all know that you can find some salon products in non-salon stores. If you have a Marc's or an Allure near you, you should be able to find All Soft Conditioner as well as other Redken products there.
Redken's website lists the suggested price of this product as $9.95. The price at my local Best Cuts is only $7.95, and Best Cuts usually advertises in a local coupon magazine, so I get another $1 off with the coupon found there. $6.95 for a really GREAT conditioner that lasts for way over a month is a steal!
