I'm one of those people who believes that it really is worth paying a little more for a product when it really works. Problem is, how do you know what works when there are hundreds of hair products that promise the same thing: beautiful hair. (Thanks to the reviewer who provides the ingredients list for allsoft conditioner, we know that there is in fact a scientific way to go about this).
But anyway, I have never really had shiny and healthy hair. Its coarse and pretty thick. Not the thickest I've ever encountered, but pretty straw-like in general.
I've done two things that I think work, and might work for you too. First, I started using a clarifying shampoo. I mean a real one, like Neutrogena clarifying shampoo...the one you're supposed to use weekly, but I used it everyday because with hair as bumpy and coarse as it is, I believe that gunk will just glom onto it forever (you know, like crap in nooks and crannies). When I used it all up I was too happy to start using the generic version (by Duane Reade).
The next thing I did (completely unintentionally, of course) was to start using All Soft conditioner by Redken. I've never believed that you absolutely must use sh/cond from the same company. I like to diagnose hair and then prescribe accordingly. I used Joico Altima (which is miles above average!), but I think I'm going to stick to this because, well, its made my hair shinier than anything I have ever tried. I feel like I want to cry.
After skeptically buying this product (post- searching much for my conditioner of choice and not finding it), I find that its been so generous. I also cut off all of my texturized layers which I don't think are conducive to silky, soft hair.
What I want to know is what are the long-term effects of this conditioner going to be? Is this the miracle that goes dull after many uses? (Keep using a clarifying shampoo to provide a "clean slate" for the conditioner and to avoid build-up).
Flat out, this is the best conditioner of my life. I sat in front of my stylist last night and she said, "Your hair is even shinier than mine, if you look at it," and she bent her knees next to me so that our heads would be the same height. I couldn't believe she noticed. She said that my hair looked a lot healthier than it had before (several months prior).
The packaging is okay, but its all a matter of preference. It doesn't announce itself in the shower/ tub with flourescent colors, and that's pretty much all I ask for.
