I seem to always be on the outlook for Curly hair products, mainly products eliminate frizz. (Aren't all of us curly heads?)
For most of my life I had SLIGHTLY wavy hair. This lasted until about age 19 when my hair started to turn curlier and curlier. Even now (at 25) it seems like it just keeps on getting curlier as time goes by. My stylist tells me hormones will do that to some women in their early 20's as long as they've always had some curl/wave to their hair.
I have the type of curly hair that will not stay straight, even when the professionals blow dry it straight. So, living in denial was never an option for me. In addition to that, it is super thick. The best way I now describe it to people relates back to my wedding last year. We had a destination wedding, so I didn't meet my stylist until right before the wedding. When we communicated through email/the phone I told her I had REALLY thick hair. When she met me she told me I should used some kind of curse word to describe just how thick it actually is.
A lot of people are after thick hair, but when it's curly AND thick - it's a hand full. And typically super frizzy.
After trying a line called Curl Friends for a couple months and being sorely disappointed, I came across several good reviews on the Redken Fresh Curls line.
Spin Control was actually the first product in this line I tried.
SO what is it?
Fresh Curls Spin Control curl-defining leave-in treatment reduces volume while refining the shape of the curl. It keeps curls smooth and frizz-free with healthy shine.
Now since I usually use some kind of leave in conditioner as a result of my hair being so dry, this was definitely a product I had to try.
Redken offers a breakdown of why this products works so while highlighting the key ingredients as follows:
Coconut Oil = frizz control
Calcium = helps curl definition
Honey = helps moisturize
The Ingredients:
water, dimethicone, cetyl alcohol, glycerin, potassium dimethicone copolyol panthenyl phosphate, peg-100 stearate, glyceryl stearate, behenamidopropyl pg-dimonium chloride, phenoxyethanol, carboxymethyl hydroxypropyl guar, fragrance/parfum, methylparaben, ethylparaben, calcium gluconate, honey, coconut oil, disodium edta, laureth-23, laureth-4, ppg-5 ceteth-20, oleth-10, disodium cocoamphodipropionate, lecithin, hydrolyzed sweet almond protein, phosphoric acid, arginine hci, taurine, olive fruit oil
Packaging & Price:
Spin Control comes in a thin little bottle that holds 5 oz of the product. The smell reminds me a lot of my husband's American Crew hair care sitting in our bathroom. It is a pleasant scent, but somewhat on the manly side.
This 5 oz bottle retails in most salons for around $12.99.
Redken's Directions:
Rub Spin Control curl defining leave-in treatment in palms and distribute evenly through towel-dried lengths to smooth hair and create frizz-free definition.
I use this, as suggested, after towel drying my hair. I typically do my make up first, and then apply a quarter sized amount of Spin Control in my hands, rub them together and spread this as evenly as possible throughout my hair. And because I let my hair dry naturally, I try to wait about 10 additional minutes before following with any other styling products.
Product thoughts:
Before trying this I definitely thought it would help, but didn't have too high of expectations. Spin Control however has exceeded my expectations completely. It takes down the volume (HUGE VOLUME!) and eliminates frizz COMPLETELY, something that Curl Friends, even at it's best never did. I have even noticed it has helped to define my curls before I even add any additional product to it.
Of course, keep in mind I use this along with co-ordinating Redken products as well, so it's hard to say if my hair's condition is so much better due to Spin Control alone.
Recommendation
My hair is now bouncy, curly, and frizz free thanks to the series of Redken's products.
I use this in combination with the following Redken Products:
*All Soft Shampoo (the fresh curls shampoo contained benzol peroxide and thus was too drying on my scalp)
*Fresh Curls Conditioner
*Fresh Curls Curl Boosting Spray.
(Reviews to come soon)
I do recommend Redken Spin Control to anyone with naturally curly hair. It's available through several websites online, as well as in salons and now in many drugstores. Additional information as well as many helpful tips on the Fresh Curls line can be found at http://www.redken.com
