Solid Treadmill (ACD4)

Written: Nov 26 '02
Pros:Foldable, very powerful motor, sturdy build, variable cushioning
Cons:Expensive, very heavy, heartrate monitor not very good.
The Bottom Line: The unit is not readily available, but if it is and you can afford it, don't hesitate.

I chose this treadmill even though it is being phased out by Reebok because Consumer Reports ranks it among the best treadmills. Now I know what they are talking about. This is a very solidly built treadmill that takes a pounding without any groans or creaks. It has a wide deck (20") that is a full 60" long, making it easy to run fast and take long strides. The motor is very powerful (2.5HP sustained), so you can exercise for a long time without worrying about overheating the motor (the manual does not recommend running the treadmill for more than an hour continuously). It it also foldable, so it fits compactly in a corner of the room when it is not being used. The deck has the ability to provide different levels of cushioning (user adjustable) and the quick speed buttons are a great plus. The range of speeds and inclines is also more than what most other units offer (1-12 mph, 0-12% incline).
Main problems with the unit are that the solidity of the build also leads to an immensely heavy machine. It took two professional movers all their strength to deliver and set it up at my place. It is so heavy, in fact, that even after it is folded up and tilted on to its wheels, I can't move it because the wheels dig in so deeply into my berber carpet! The unit also comes with a heartrate monitor that is worn around the chest and is supposed to communicate wirelessly with the machine. But I found that the machine could not pick up the signals from the monitor consistently. I have given up using the monitor. Other than that, I am sure this machine will last longer than most people's resolve to exercise!
