Chris_Billings's Full Review: Reeses Peanut Butter Cups 1.6 Oz
If I had to pick one candy to stock up on this Halloween, it would probably have to be Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. I've been eating these chocolates since I was a little kid. Every time I go into a grocery store I find it hard not to be drawn to the candy display at the checkout stand. It's also hard when grocery stores have sales on their candy like "4 for $1.00" or "2 for $1.00". It's especially hard to pass up a candy with a chocolate and peanut butter combination.
I had to run to Wal-Mart for something late the other night and of course while standing in the Express Lane (20 items or Less) I had to glance over to the candy display. That evening all of the double packs (1.5oz) Reese's Peanut Butter Cups were "2 for .50".
Each 1.5oz pack of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups has two peanut butter cups roughly the size of a silver dollar (approximately). They measure about 2 inches in diameter and are ¾ inch thick. I remember when Reese's Peanut Butter Cups were over 3 inches in diameter and ½ inch thick. Those were the days! The chocolate cups are filled with a very creamy blend of peanut butter, light in color but ultra rich. I find myself eating a couple dozen packs until I start to feel full. It's easy to eat several packs in one sitting. I've never eaten a candy that's as addicting as Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. I can eat a whole 11oz bag of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups Miniatures (approximately 35 pieces) within a matter of minutes.
There is only a slight after taste of peanut butter which goes away in a matter of minutes and I use that as an excuse to eat more. If I can't still taste the chocolate or peanut butter anymore, it's time to have another pack. Even though the peanut butter is rich, it's not overwhelming like you would think. The balance between the chocolate and peanut butter is just right. The peanut butter cups melt very quickly and are almost greasy feeling while eating them. The greasy feel is because of the peanut oil. They can get messy at times especially on a hot/warm day. I usually stick them in the fridge or freezer before eating them. They warm up quickly though, even after being in a freezer for a while. They seem to have a low melting point and I am surprised that they don't melt all over while at the store.
My Dad is a diabetic and he loves these. It's probably his favorite candy. Actually, pretty much all food made with peanut butter is his favorite. Peanut Butter is very low in fat and practically no carbohydrates and is high in protein. Peanut Butter is very good for diabetics because the high protein aides in the proper production of natural insulin in the body, builds muscle, and is filling. This particular candy is higher in "carbs" though because of the milk and added sugar. So he has to be careful and watch how much he consumes...which is really hard sometimes. Each peanut butter cup has 12g of Total Carbs (almost 11g being sugar). It's not a lot if eaten in moderation and spaced properly between meals.
I don't eat a lot of candy myself anymore over the past several years and since my Dad is a diabetic the whole family tries to be really careful in what we bring in the house. But at Halloween we like to splurge a little bit more than usual. The key is moderation. If you are able to limit the amount of candy you consume without being monitored or babysat then go ahead and have a couple of peanut butter cups. If you cannot eat the candy in moderation and have no will power, then DO NOT BUY this candy. They are really good and hard to put down. _________________________
