Pros:Shaves clothes without damaging them, powerful, battery operated
The Bottom Line: A wonderful shaver that keeps clothes free of pills.
For years I've used a clothes shaver to keep my sweaters looking like new. Even sweaters just a few months old can get pills on them that look unsightly. My shavers have been reliable, but I use them so much that the blades do get dull eventually.
When I saw a brand new, still in the package Remington Fuzz-Away Clothes Shaver at a garage sale for only 50 cents I didn't think twice about snatching it up.
About The Product
This clothes shaver is cordless and is battery operated. The package claims the product "shaves and saves your clothes, fabric, upholstery and drapes". The "Safe-T Precision Blades" safely trim pills, threads and fuzz from clothing.
This Remington Fuzz-Away Clothes Shaver works great. It takes one "C" sized battery but is quite powerful. My Evercare takes 2 AA batteries. The battery compartment is easy to open, as is the lint compartment.
The blade and fan are covered by screw-on a foil cap. This prevents the blades from cutting too deeply into the fabric. You can remove the foil cap to replace the blades and to remove large pills that are slowing the shaver from doing its job.
There's one simple On/Off switch on the front that's hard to miss, and the storage compartment that holds the lint is quite large. It can hold the lint from cleaning one entire sweater before I have to empty it out. If you have a sweater with large pills it will probably need to be emptied more often.
Using this shaver is easy, but there is a bit of a learning curve. I lay my sweaters flat and lightly stroke them back and forth with the shaver. Pills are shaved off and are sucked into the storage compartment. A few times I have gotten too close and have cut into the yarn fibers of my sweaters a bit deeper than I intended to. You can be in danger of making a hole in your sweaters if you are too aggressive.
Sometimes I run into a section of pills that are resistant to coming off, and when that happens I place my hand inside the sweater and and place it under the area I am trying to shave. This works quite well.
The key to using this shaver successfully is to have a light hand. Generally you don't need to press the shaver heavily into the garments being worked on.
As I said earlier, sometimes pills will clog up the blades, but I don't always take the time to remove the foil cover and remove them. Sometimes just blowing on the foil cover can dislodge them and this is a much faster way of handling the clogs. I always know when the blades are getting clogged because the shaver sounds like the batteries are starting to die. As soon as I blow away the clogs it revs up again!
Not only does this work well on sweaters, it also works great on small pills that occur on sweat pants. I buy my granddaughter a lot of second hand clothes, and I cleaned up a pair of sweat pants a few days ago and now they look new again. This shaver can really transform a ratty looking sweater into one that looks new! I love it.
