These tools vary in price and operation- The 476 is a very affordable and primitive .22 caliber round single shoot tool.
If this makes it sound like a firearm, well, that is because it is. There is a chamber that takes a small explosive charge that looks alot like a small bullet. Fasteners are loaded into the end of the barrel. push the barrel against the item you are attempting to fasten, smack the firing cap on the end with a few good solid hammer blows, and BAM! a small explosion pushes the fastener through the item you are trying to fasten and solidly into the concrete or steel.
There are many variations to this tool- some are semi automatic, while this one gets reloaded after each shot.
some use a more powerful .27 caliber load, while this is a smaller .22 caliber tool. For the occasional user, this works great for fastening firring strips and studs to concrete floors and walls, conduit and outlet boxes to brick or any other masonary surface, or any other time you need to fasten items to masonary or steel.
Use of hearing protection with this tool is mandatory! it is loud like a gunshot. Keeping the tool lubricated with a thin coat of WD-40 is a good practice to ward off rust on the tool.
There are many different colored loads and the instructions will dictate which loads are appropriate for what materials. The colors are an indicator of the strength of the load(amount of gun powder) Using too powerful of a load will overdrive the fastener and drive the piston out of the bore, damaging the tool. Spalling of the concrete can also occur, so eye protection is a good idea as well when using these tools.
These tools will make you forget about using a hammer drill to make holes for anchors or tapcons to set items in masonary-think of it as a framing nailer for concrete.
Included with the tool are a starter set assortment of loads in various strengths and a couple different lengths of nails.(there is no case)You will also have to supply the eye and ear protection.
