knitsnbytes's Full Review: Remington H 1012i Hot Rollers Express Set Ionic
Introduction
I've been using hot rollers since my first set in my teens (wickedly spiked, heavy rollers that burnt my scalp. One must indeed suffer to be beautiful!)
The improvements in these rollers is remarkable, not the least of which is that now you can have a small set that fits in an overnight bag, heats up very quickly, and will provide a very nice set of curls in about 10 minutes. I've had the Remington Express set for a while, and it has been a real workhorse.
What you get
The set comes in a cordura nylon built-in case with a flap and transparent plastic window. You actually do not take the unit out of the nylon case. You get five large diameter rollers and five smaller ones. There is a pouch with a velcro attachment that contains the clips (plastic half-cylinders) and an attached power cord. That's it.
How it works
You simply plug in the rollers and wait for them to change color. They lighten. When the color has changed, you roll your hair and clip with the appropriate clip (they are color coded by diameter so you won't jam a small clip on a large roller.) Wait 5-10 minutes, unroll and comb out your curls.
The curl is good and reasonably firm, especially if you employ a trick by Hollywood makeup artist Alexis Vogel, who recommends leaving the rollers in longer --up to 30 minutes even as they are totally cooled down. She claims this makes a more long-lasting set and I have to agree.
Who is this set best suited for?
If you have medium short to medium long hair, this set is useful. You may have to reheat and curl the other half of your tresses if you have a lot of hair (I do.) Five rollers of each size is only enough, really, to do medium length hair. The large roller is not like an orange-juice-can size, it's only about 1.5 inches in diameter, so if you want big hair curls, seek elsewhere. Also, I find the smaller rollers are not what I really want to roll my long, unlayered hair with, so I have to reset the unit a couple of times to do a really formal set. But for travel, I put up with this because the unit is so compact.
If you have a tiny bathroom or want to use this in your office (desk to dinner?) then this set is also fantastic.
Not so great things
I find the ends of the rollers are very hot and sometimes I have to put a tissue under the end to keep the rollers from burning my skin, depending on where they are resting on my head.
The large roller as I pointed out, is only so large, and the smaller are less useful for me (I don't want tight curls.)
You have to reheat the unit and set your head in stages if you want a full 'do.
Summary
This set travels well, stores well and is great for a quick set for gals on the go. If you plan to make hot rollers a regular part of your beauty regime and if you have very long hair, you will probably need to find a different set, as there are only five medium-large rollers and they handle a limited amount of hair per roller.
