Eucalyptus not DEET..... Does it Repel?
by jo.com | Nov 05 '03
Pros: Repel is definately less toxic than other products.
Cons: Repel doesn't work any better than anything else I've used. Can cause irritation.

Tried pure citronella? (Reply to this comment)
by pranapana
When I was a kid in Malaysia we always used to get "sprayed" with citronella - basically 1/10 pure citronella oil 9/10 water in a plastic spray bottle (like the type hairdressers use). This was sprayed on our clothes (collars, sleeves and pants legs) and on exposed forearms. (but not on faces)

Didn't seem to stain our clothes and didn't affect my sister's sensitive skin.

Kept the mozzies away quite well, although you do have to reapply after 3 hours or so.

I find this is the most natural way - since citronella is a common active ingrediant in commercial repellants anyway. It's cheap too - except you have to make fresh batches yourself, and the strong smell may take getting used to.

Another one - strangely at night when the mozzies start biting i've found that putting some tea tree cream (I use Thursday Plantation) on the affected area helps keep any additional biters away.

Thanks for the great reviews.

...used crushed Eucalyptus leaves rubbed onto my skin as a natural bug repellent during bare-bones survival trips in Australia as well as other less-severe outings in the southern US and Ecuador when I forgot to bring the bug dope. It works OK, but requires frequent reapplication. (They also smell nice and make a reasonable nasal decongestant, I've found).

Based on that, I bought some of this product a while ago and my experiences are similar to yours. Better than nothing, and lasts a lot longer than crushed leaves, but needs frequent reapplication (more than the 2 "allowed" on the bottle) and definitely it's not water or sweat-proof.

Thanks for the review.
