Pros: Cheap menu.
Cons: Trendy, loud busy spot to grab a taste of Asian flavors.
The Bottom Line: Try it if you're in the Union Square area, but don't make a point to run over and wait in the noise for a table.

I first went to Republic years ago, for a bite between classes. Walking around the Union Square area, this place offers decent food at truly low prices. The portions are small, but given the prices, ordering extra food isn't a problem. In this neighborhood, there aren't many choices for Asian cuisine, so it's really in fares well for those craving noodles or rice dishes, as typical in Asian cuisine. I especially liked the grilled squid appetizer, and am able to almost take anything off the menu for my main dish.
The decoration of the place is pretty cool with huge b/w photographs on the wall, and waiters that take your order via a handheld device that electronically transmits your order to the kitchen. The open kitchen is pretty neat, and service is okay.
Depending on the time of day, this place can be pretty packed, given the sizable bar up front and waiting area for the singles to meet. Since I would walk in at any time for an afternoon bite, not having to wait for a table was not a problem. When it does become pretty packed, you'll be lucky to even be able to walk through to speak to a hostess, let alone get a table. And with a mass of people waiting, you may want to reconsider eating here. It's gets terribly loud (from everyone talking over each other), and you can hardly even think yourself think, let alone have a private conversation, since you may very well be sharing a table.
I'd go back if I were to pass through the area, but would not make a trip over to specifically eat there. It's not overly impressive, but makes a neat casual meal.
