By the time you're done eating at Republic, your butt will hurt. It's true. You'll sit one unpadded wooden benches, possibly at a table with people you don't know while you eat their good, affordable pan-asian food. The room tries to go for sophisticated, while just managing to be cavernous (and loud because of the accompanying accoustics), and the menu is an odd combination of soups, dumpings and noodle dishes. Service is hurried and occassionally snobby, but usually tolerable when the staff can figure out how to work their futuristic ordering devices (no pen and paper here). Good for an after work drink or a weekend snack -- wouldn't recommend it as a dinner destination -- it tries to be too many things to really provide you with a cohesive experience. Best bets: the fried shrimp dumplings in a spicey apricot sauce and the chocolate torte with coconut ice cream for dessert.
