republic is right next door to where i live, and i was reluctant to go inside because it appeared to be very pricey and very hip in an intimidating kind of way. i was pleasantly surprised when i looked at the menu and found most of the entrees priced at $7 or $8.
the space of the restaurant is surprising, b/c most restaurants in new york are quite small, and they have a smoking section, which is a plus. the food ranges from pad thai to vietnamese noodles to rice dishes and i was very surprised that when i ordered the chicken udon, my waiter was very honest in recommending something else to me.
orders are taken on these slick palm-pilot-esque computers and food is served quickly. i find everything that i've tried there to be spicey enough for my tastes, and large portions to boot. i always take leftovers home.
my favorite dishes are the bbq pork noodles, the pad thai and the chicken rice dish. i still think that this place is a restaurant you go to "to be seen" and "to be noticed" by other urban hipsters, but the food is good, the prices are good and the desserts are to die for. i recommend the chocolate truffle cake and the coconut sorbet.
