Going to Republic on the advice of a friend, I wanted to pop in for a quick meal before the theater. Well, I got the quick meal, and that's about it.
The place was terribly crowded and had a noise level so high that it made it difficult to tell the host that my friend and I wanted a table for two. Other than the host shouting out names, there was no other signal to say that your table was ready.
Being seated, I realized that the seating is completely cafeteria style reminiscent of my high school back in the midwest. We were shown to a table and seated directly next to two other people crammed into the crowd who seemed a little resentful towards us for taking up some of their space. Again, I felt like the nerd back in school when there was nowhere else to sit during lunch: the people thought they were going to be labeled nerds by association.
Before I even plopped my butt on the hard wooden bench, there was someone there plopping down water. Lovely. But then it took another 10 minutes for someone to take a drink order, and never did see the water person again.
The meal was ordered from a menu offering a lot of noodles and a lot of soup. That's fine, nothing spectacular and the prices were moderate. And within about 5 minutes of having ordered the food, it was at the table. I enjoy fast service, but was beginning to realize that the focus was on turnover, not fast and friendly service. In all the hustle and bustle, it was impossible to get the attention of the waiter or the people in charge of water. The food was fine, nothing special.
I wish I could give more specifics about the whole experience, but it all happened in such a blur, I don't remember much. Food is fine, service is done in a manner which reminded me of trying to get one last meal in before a storm hits, and the atmosphere did little to insure peaceful digestion.
