| pippadaisy's Full Review: Rescue Heroes Bicycle Helmet Value Pack |
There are two things in the world that my son loves: Buzz Lightyear, and his Fisher Price Rescue Heroes. Since his older sister got a new two-wheeler for her birthday, he would be inheriting his sister's Radio Flyer Classic Red Tricycle, and needed a bicycle helmet of his own. My mother, knowing that hats are always an issue, saw the Rescue Heroes Bicycle Helmet Value Pack and thought it might encourage him to keep the helmet on, so it arrived for his birthday in March.
::: The Value Pack :::
Included in the Rescue Heroes Bicycle Helmet Value Packare one Rescue Heroes video tape (episodes will vary), one clear plastic water bottle with the Rescue Heroes logo and a black sippy cap, and one helmet. The helmet is mostly grey with top vents, blue stripes down the center, and red, yellow, and black Rescue Heroes logos. The back of the helmet features the Rescue Heroes text logo, while the front has the red "R" that I think every little boy under the age of 8 knows on sight.
The helmet complies with the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) safety standard for helmets for ages five and over. It includes foam inserts to customize the fit, and the box states that it fits head sizes 21¼" to 22".
::: Wait, You Said Tricycle :::
My son Buster is the third generation of large melon-headed children. My father, the original Watermelon Head, as described by his uncle, begat my sister, the proud mother of two little boys who were wearing Gap size 5-7 hats at the tender age of 2, and me, the woman whose hat size is larger than her husband's, and whose children consistently have heads in the 95th to 99th percentile, even when the rest of their measurements are below the 50th. As a result, no tiny toddler helmet is going to fit on any two-year-old in this household, but I honestly have to wonder what child over five this helmet WOULD fit onto. At two, this helmet fit my child perfectly, and while his head is large, it isn't off-the-charts large.
The videotape quickly joined our collection and remains indistinguishable from the rest. Suffice to say that it has two animated episodes of characters with names like porn stars (Gil Gripper, Jake Justice, Roger Houston, Billy Blazes, etc.) rescuing innocent citizens from forces of nature.
The water bottle is fairly flimsy, but it has been used a couple of times, and has held up well to dishwasher use.
::: Buster Blazes :::
As expected, Buster balked at wearing any sort of anything on his head. However, once I brought out the Rescue Heroes Bicycle Helmet Value Pack helmet with its easily identifiable logos, he couldn't WAIT to put it on. All summer, he'd run outside, grab the helmet, and put it on first thing.
::: Roger, Mommy, and You? :::
So long as the helmet meets the CPSC guidelines and my son will wear it, I'm all for it. I definitely think it's a worthwhile expenditure to shell out a few more dollars for a videotape you probably don't want or need and a water bottle you probably won't use to get a helmet that you child will be willing to wear. My mother found that with the Rescue Heroes Bicycle Helmet Value Pack.
I'd recommend that you measure your child's head, or surreptitiously try this on in the store, but odds are, it's going to fit toddler boys much better than any school-ager.
