| twunschl's Full Review: Residence Inn by Marriott Cleveland Mentor |
When we were invited to a family wedding just outside of Cleveland, we opted to stay at the Residence Inn Mentor. It was close to other family member and my mother in law had already stayed here once and enjoyed her stay. She booked a block of rooms from Marriott.com, which is an easy site to navigate. I tried to find a better deal than the $99 a night that she had reserved and I couldnt find one.
Getting There
The Residence Inn Mentor is located just off of the Ohio 2. Take the Heisley Road exit, make an immediate left off of the expressway and follow the road to the hotel. There is a convenient drop off area right in front and there is reserved parking near the door for guests that are checking in.
Checking in and the lobby
Checking in is also a breeze. The main desk is located right inside the main doors. There were two people at the desk and we were given our room keys after a swipe of our credit card and we signed the we wont have a party papers (which I found funny, since the only other time I had been at a Residence Inn was for a party in college). To the right, on the way to the elevators, there was a large dining room. Everything was very pretty in dark red wood and dark carpeting. The dining room is only for breakfast but you can lounge in here throughout the day.
Our Room
We were pleasantly surprised with our room. The arrangement was completely open, with a nice kitchen, living area and bedroom. Everything was in the same colors as the downstairs, with red wood, and dark green and wine accents. As I sat on the couch for a while, I actually noticed how clean the carpeting was. You could actually see vacuum cleaner tracks. I then started to notice that everything was amazingly clean, no dust or cup rings anywhere. Since I tend to notice dirt and not cleanliness, I was impressed.
I decided to check out the kitchen since I had never really stayed in a room with a kitchen before. The cupboards were stocked with just about anything you could need for a short stay. There were pots and pans, utensils, measuring cups, colander and even sharp cutting knife. Nice plates, glasses and silverware along with linen napkins and tablecloths would complete your meal. Inside the full sized refrigerator, there was a pitcher for juice or water and there was a full icemaker in the freezer. Beside the refrigerator, there was a linen closet with directions for laundry service and an iron and ironing board.
The bathroom was an arrangement that I am not fond of. The sink was next to the bed and there was no door on this area. I hate this, since I am an early riser and my husband tends to sleep in. No matter how quiet I am, you just cant make a hair dryer quiet. I ended up going to my in-laws room to dry my hair in the morning. Behind the sink, there is a large clothes closet with double sliding mirrored doors. The bathroom itself was small, but comfortable with a toilet and the cleanest, shiny bathtub I have ever seen. We were supplied with only soap and shampoo, so make sure that you bring your own conditioner if you use it.
The bed was a king size and was a little soft for my taste. I woke up soar in the morning. The pillows were also quite small and flat. The bed was triple sheeted though, one of my favorite things. Next to each side of the bed, there were nice end tables and an alarm clock. The television swiveled and could be viewed from the living area or bed. We were pleased that they offered cable stations including three channels of HBO.
After the wedding and the four hour drive to get to Mentor, all we wanted was a good nights sleep. That wasnt to happen. The design of the air conditioning unit is so poor, that I cant believe it was allowed in the hotel. Each room had an outside wall and the air conditioner was housed next to the bed. When the unit would kick on, it made this god awful loud BANG and this unbelievably loud WOOSHING noise would commence. All night long I woke up to BANG, WHOOSH. To make matters worse, our room faced the expressway and all night long we heard semis and cars whiz by. If you are staying at this hotel, make sure to request a room away from the expressway.
Pool and other fun stuff
In the morning, I met my in-laws down at the pool. There is a nice sized, heated pool that ranged from about 3 feet to 5 feet. There is also a large Jacuzzi with chairs, tables and lounge chairs. Just beyond the pool area there was this cool, basketball/volleyball/badminton/tennis court thingy. There was a net that you could lower or raise for the particular sport that you were playing or you could remove it all together and play basketball.
Breakfast
Breakfast was complimentary, and although I didnt eat anything, I checked it out and everyone said that it was good. There was a toaster for English muffins, bagels and toast. Danishes and donuts were also available. There were two covered hot trays that contained scrambled eggs and bacon. To drink, there was orange juice, coffee, tea and hot chocolate.
What is near by
The Residence Inn Mentor is located down a road that has about a gazillion little places that are all within walking distance. To eat, I saw a McDonalds, Burger King, Subway and Damons Rib House. There was a large movie theatre right next door also. Down the road a ways there was a Home Depot (just in case you need to do some home improvements) and a Gander Mountain sporting goods store. There were a few strip malls and quite a bit of space where new malls and restaurants are sure to pop up in the coming year. Relatives said that the area is expanding at a fast rate.
All in all
I would stay here again, especially if it was in the winter when I wouldnt have the air conditioning on. It was a great, friendly hotel in a good location.
