Resident Evil 3 --- Milla Jovovich is back to kill some more zombies

Mar 12, 2008
Review by
Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:good action, exciting at times, interesting story

Cons:need to see the first two to understand, a little underdeveloped

The Bottom Line: Exciting in parts, it is definitely recommended to fans of the series, but everyone else can just pass on this one.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

Milla Jovovich is back as Alice, who through plot-devices survived the downfall of Raccoon City, and now the collapse of the rest of the world due to a virus that has turned most of mankind into zombies (the T-Virus). The third movie in the series, Resident Evil: Extinction seeks to give yet another chapter in the ever evolving story of Resident Evil. Based on a video game originally, the series of films have tried to keep pace with new releases on the video game front, and have found new excuses to bring back the characters for another go-round. At the heart of these stories, the Resident Evil films are all about fighting zombies, while trying not to get bit (as this is how the virus is spread most of the time), and now the human population is sporadic at best across the world.

"Extinction" opens with our hero (Alice) making her way through the wastelands of the South Western United States. She has been monitoring radio transmissions, trying to locate other survivors of the ravaged planet in the hopes of either helping them or joining up with them. As the narrator of the story starts to let us know, the world has been changing ever since the virus really took hold, destroying water supplies and eliminating nearly all life on the planet. Alice has the hope of heading to Alaska, having found information leading her to believe that the virus has not spread there, and nursing the unseen faith she has to get there. It is on this journey, as she crosses through Nevada, that this particular chapter of Resident Evil begins to take form, and she finds herself being tracked (once again) by scientists that want to do her harm.

To provide an exciting and interesting sub-plot to Alice's story, we get to watch a convoy of people head across Nevada as well. They are a rag-tag bunch, moving from city to city, just trying to survive in this zombie-infested world. It goes without saying that they are going to cross paths with Alice, and of course it happens when the convoy of trucks gets attacked for the first time. The 40-or-so people are afraid of Alice at first, and of course impressed with her abilities to fight back against zombies and other creatures left in the world. For a short time she will lend her services to help them make it to Alaska as well, and maybe they can make it if the people tracking down Alice don't kill off everyone first. The story has been set, and now its a fight for survival including many recognizable characters played by the likes of Ali Larter (Heroes), Ashanti (Coach Carter), and Oded Fehr (The Mummy Films).

If you have seen the first two films in the series, you know where this story is going, and are fully aware that there will be a lot of zombie killing in Part 3. For the uninitiated, I would strongly suggest seeing the first two films before this one, as a lot of the flashbacks may not make very much sense. It also may not be clear what the motives of the main characters are if you don't know what put her in this position in the first place. To be fair to the film, I will grade it on the "Resident Evil" scale rather than as a stand alone film, as you will not want to see this one out of order. In that regard it is average overall, with some interesting action, and of course some exciting fight sequences showcasing how flexible Milla Jovovich really can be. It's not really a fulfilling story in the series though, and left some things to be desired with the new characters. If you enjoyed the first two, then you will probably enjoy this one just as well, but if you didn't, there isn't any reason to watch this one.
