About Me: Retired teacher who loves to read.

This is One Reunion I'd like to Miss.

Written: Feb 19 '07
Pros:Great reading, believable characters
Cons:no cons
The Bottom Line: Excellent combination of present and future NY. Interesting and believable character development. Good twisted plot.

When we hear the word “reunion”, we think first of a high school reunion. Then we have a college reunion and of course, a family reunion. But whoever heard of a reunion in death?

Eve Dallas is about to.

First let me introduce you to our main characters in Reunion in Death:

NYPSD Homicide Detective, Lt. Eve Dallas
Tough city cop who had a rotten childhood that she hardly remembers.
She knows she was “put into the system” at a very early age. She doesn’t remember much before that but what she doesn’t remember is haunting her in her dreams.

Roarke
Dallas’ loving husband.
He’s a self-made multi-billionaire who loves spoiling his wife – much to her dismay.
Roarke’s childhood wasn’t easy and his method of getting to the top wasn’t quite what you’d call legal. Yet, since meeting, falling in love with and marrying Eve, he’s gone legit and that fact still confuses him and his housekeeper, Summerset.

Summerset
He’s responsible for giving Roarke a chance to change his ways. Rather than being a wild kid on the streets of Dublin, Summerset gives Roarke a home.
Roarke feels he owes Summerset his life and provides him with a home, finances and friendship for life.

Officer Delia Peabody
Dallas’ aide and friend. While Dallas can study a crime scene with cold and calculating eyes, Peabody can see it from a more personal, emotional kind of way. They make a great team and Dallas is beginning to realize that Delia makes a great friend.

Detective Ian McNab
Whenever Dallas a problem with her office computer, or needs some kind of computer surveillance, she calls on McNab and his boss Feeny.
Ian is a smart but cocky cop who would never miss making the worst dressed list. There seems to be no pattern or color scheme to his wardrobe except to be outlandish. He’s a great cop and completely attracted to Peabody.

Dr. Charlotte Mira
Dr. Mira finds herself in every In Death book but takes a backseat to the action. Her character helps Dallas figure out the psyche of each perpetrator. She also tries to convince Dallas to undergo therapy to help with her nightmares. Mira is a quiet, extremely feminine woman who eventually shows her own inner strength when needed to help Dallas with a case.

Mavis Freestone
Long time friend of Eve’s. Mavis, thanks to Roarke, has become a very popular singer whose career is soaring. Mavis, with the exception of Roarke, is the one person who can get Dallas to completely relax. She’s had her ups and downs and the friendship between Mavis and Dallas is definitely one to be envied.

There are other characters that appear in each book in the series but while their positions in the book give their own importance, they are only supporting characters to enhance the story.

A bit about the plot:

A wealthy man, Walter Pettibone, is murdered at his own birthday party.

The manager at the catering hall realizes the importance of keeping everyone together while waiting for the police. Yet, he notices one particular waitress slip out the door. He’s not able to stop her but keeps a very good description in mind.

As Dallas interviews the witnesses, the manager describes the missing waitress and suddenly Dallas knows exactly who she is. What she doesn’t yet know is why she chose this particular man.

Dallas was responsible for placing Julianna Dunne behind bars for previous murders. Dunne was responsible for marrying and murdering wealthy men for their money. Yet, she wasn’t married to Pettibone so why did she kill him? And will she stop there?

Dallas’ investigation takes her to places she wished she had to visit – physically and mentally. The investigation hints at a possible target and the thought of it has Dallas terrified.

I’ve heard many phrases indicating what revenge is yet, Reunion in Death takes revenge to a new level.

I found that while I’m enjoying this book tremendously, it makes me think about the people in my past. Have I hurt or annoyed someone so much that they’d think of coming after me or my family? What’s that saying – ‘time heals no wounds?’

Makes you think.

I guess in a way, one of the things I enjoy about this and the other In Death books is the loving relationship between Dallas and Roarke. They don’t understand each other but they know their love makes up for it. They realize that without each other, life would never be the same.

Theirs is a roller coaster ride of emotion and passion that makes the love story portion of this book a book in itself.

Then you have the developing relationship between Peabody and McNab. They are so much fun to watch (er, read about). Their attraction to each other and the denial they both insist on.

Another relationship that is very interesting is what’s happening between Dallas and Summerset. He comes across as a very stiff, professional butler but deep down inside, he’d do anything for Roarke and Dallas, too, since Roarke loves her so much.

Dallas on the other hand, doesn’t understand Summerset’s stiff personality. But she realizes his undying loyalty to her husband and respects him for it.

Yet, neither will give an inch and make their relationship friendly. They actually enjoy their bickering and realize things would not be the same should they become “mushy” as Dallas would say it.

I think you’ll really enjoy it as much as I did.

Thank you for reading.
