Why just sing, when you can reckon/revel?
Written: Aug 31 '01
Pros:The musical division between two discs, wide range of styles and instrumentals... etc.
Cons:None. Whatsoever.
The Bottom Line: On the whole, a blend of musical tastes brought together to convey a message and please the ears of any listener.
What can I say? She's gone and done it again. If L'il Kim is the Queen Bee of Hip Hop, then Ani DiFranco is the Queen Bee of it all: jazz, folk, punk, trip hop, r&b, shall I go on? This album has hit the stores at the peak of the songtress' career, how much further can she go? I'm willing to bet she has a lot left in her after the production of this truly heroic and righteous album.
Reckoning/Revelling is a two disc set of energizing/angry/soft/proud/happy songs. The album holds true to it's name. As is shown in her music, Ani had some serious Reckoning/Revelling to do when she created this piece. The first disc, Reckoning, incorporates her tell-tale amazing guitar and a softer variety of instruments. Hypnotizing lyrics combine with the music to create a truly beautiful piece of music that explores life, herself, and as always, politics. Revelling is a slightly more upbeat disc, perhaps angrier, and Ani delves into synthetic sounds and hard beats to get her revelling message across.
Even if you're not an Ani fan, I truly recommend this album, as I hold it in the highest regard. I think once you hear it, you will too.
