I'm no Emeril

Jul 22, 2002 (Updated Jul 23, 2002)

Pros:Good general cookware; lightweight; price

Cons:Not as good as my mother's (30-y/o) set!

The Bottom Line: A good set for daily use. I recommend adding a couple of nonstick fry pans to the set, though. Also, invest in some Brillo/SOS pads for those occasional stains/residue.

When I first got my own apartment years ago, I decided that none other than Revereware would be my cookware. After all, my mother has had hers for going on 30 years, and absolutely loves it. However, she has the copper bottom set, which I have seen her polish after every use. Therefore, I decided that my set had to have the stainless bottom.

Now, I'm no Emeril, but the pots/pans are good enough for my daily cooking. I do have some complaints, though. The fry pan was useless; everything, no matter what heat level or amount of oil used (on a gas stove), stuck! I suggest you invest in SOS pads if you use the fry pan (I put my in this year's yard sale). My pots seem to discolor and stain much more easily than my mother's set. The metal doesn't seem to be as thick as the older models. Again, I have to use a scrub brush or SOS pad to remedy this, which isn't a huge problem.

What I like about this set of pots is that they are lightweight, even when full of food. I'm a fairly petite person, so I wouldn't want to lug around any of those heavy pots, and these are just the ticket for that. Also, they are dishwasher safe, which is a must, since I'm not one to handwash dishes. Another plus is that they are inexpensive, so they are great for college students, newly married couples, etc. I also purchased two sizes of the nonstick fry pans with lids, which are the mainstay for anything I need to brown/fry.

Update: 7/23/02
Some other things I thought to add (also, thank you to those who gave comments!).

My set was a 7 pc set: 1 quart pan with lid, 1-1/2 quart pan with lid, 6 quart pot (double handled) with lid, and fry pan (I don't remember the size of the fry pan, but the lid for the 6 qt pot fit the fry pan).

The handles are made of a black plastic composite, and are cool touch. They are riveted to the pots, but the rivets are smooth on the inside of the pot, so there is no gunk build-up. Each handle on the pots has a silver ring, making it an option of hanging them from a pot rack.

The lids are of good design -- thick and durable -- though this particular set did not come with vented lids (I know Revereware offers this on a different line of theirs). The knobs are cool touch, and seem to screw in (they occasionally seem loose, but have never come off; I just tighten them).

The pots do not have an easy-pour spout, or edging that makes them easy for transferring liquids; liquids are guaranteed to drip down the sides if your pour!

Over the seven years that I've had the pots, they've gotten scratched, both inside and out, because I stack them in my cabinets, sometimes use metal spoons, put them in the dishwasher, etc.

The reason I got rid of the fry pan:Regardless of pre-heating, adding oil (even covering the bottom with enough oil for proper frying) or butter, everying stuck -- eggs, chicken, salmon patties, etc. Maybe it can be attributed to my inexperience as a cook at the time, or just impatience?

I've used my Revereware set for the last 5 years on a gas stove; before that, I used them on an electric stove. They seem to do as well on either. However, these pots/pans are not made to go in the oven.

For cleaning: I'm sure Revereware recommends their cleaning cream, which I have never purchased. I usually pre-soak if needed, then pop them in the dishwashwer.

For cooking: I generally use bamboo or nylon utensils, but sometimes grab a metal spoon, which I'm sure has contributed to the interior scratches.

As far as warranty goes: I'm not sure about that, and wouldn't even venture to say without research.

Hope the extra info helps!
