skbreese's Full Review: Revlon Colorsilk Salon Formula Ammonia Free Hairco...
I have thick, straight, brown hair that requires regular perms to maintain a decent body wave. For years I shunned do-it-yourself hair color, on the advice of hairdressers that told me that coloring my permed hair could damage it. However, the last few years, the gray hairs have started to accumulate more and more, and I decided to take the plunge and try coloring my hair. Based on the color selection, compatibility with permed hair, and price, I decided to purchase Revlon Colorsilk Salon Formula Ammonia Free Hair Color. Upon consulting the color guide on the back of the box, I decided on the light brown, to bring out my natural salt and pepper shade, while covering the gray.
The Company:
Revlon was founded in 1932 in the middle of the Great Depression by Charles Revson and his brother Joseph, along with a Chemist, Charles Lachman, thus adding the "L" in the Revlon name. The company began with a single product, nail enamel, and in 1937 started selling nail polish in department and drug stores. In just 6 years, the company became a multimillion dollar organization. By 1940, Revlon added lipstick, and during World War II, they added makeup and related products. The company currently offers a full line of cosmetics, skin care, fragrances, and personal care products, employing over 6,000 workers with revenues in excess of $1.4 USD (2007).
The Product:
Revlon offers 41 different shades in the Colorsilk line, ranging from black to ultra light blond. Each kit contains a bottle of ammonia-free colorant, cream color developer, after color conditioner, step-by-step instructions, and a pair of thin plastic gloves. The coloring process is easy; you simply mix the colorant and developer together, shake vigorously, and apply to the roots of your hair. The instructions advise users to part the hair into four sections using hair clips, but since I already have short hair, I simply parted it in the middle, and saturated my hair with the color mixture. The coloring process takes 25 minutes, followed by rinsing and adding conditioner before the final rinse. The conditioning requires another 5 minutes, before rinsing. Re-touching the hair requires adding color the roots, and gently massaging throughout the hair with a processing time of 20 minutes, followed by the same rinsing and conditioning process.
The Result:
After a somewhat messy, but relatively hassle free process, I could immediately tell a difference in the color of my hair. After drying, it had a nice light brown coloring with a salt and pepper highlight effect and a nice, light clean, fragrance; which is exactly what I wanted. In order to achieve uniform color throughout, you will likely need a helper for those hard to reach areas. I made the mistake of doing it myself the frist time, and did not get completely even color throughout.
Still, I was very satisfied with the tint and silky smooth texture of my hair after after conditioning. It does not appear that there has been any damage to my hair, nor did the color appear to affect the quality of my perm. The initial coloring lasted about 6 weeks, with every other day washings, before needing a touch-up
The box also contains a warning that the colorant can cause allergic reactions, and provides instructions on how to perform and allergy skin test 48 hours prior to coloring.
Recommendation:
For the nominal price of $2.99, Revlon's Colorsilk Salon Formula Ammonia Free Haircolor, is a great bargain. The light brown color, resulted in natural looking highlights to my salt and pepper hair, while covering most of the gray. It also left my my hair feeling soft and silky with no damage to my hair or perm.
I see no need to include an exhaustive list of ingredients for the colorant, cream developer, and conditioner, all of which can be found on-line. Let me suffice to say, that I have been very pleased with this product. It has become the permanent solution to covering my gray strands, while enhancing the natural salt and pepper highlights, that keep my hair looking healthy...and me feeling a couple of years younger!
