| tjarnold's Full Review: Revlon Colorstay Lipliner |
Nail polish distributors Charles and Joseph Revson and nail polish supplier Charles Lachman together founded Revlon in 1932, introducing breakthrough formulas and innovative colors. Seventy years later, the powerhouse Revlon brand is stronger than ever, the #1 brand in mass market color cosmetics, and still introducing breakthrough formulas. Or at least trying.
The Colorstay Collection (“Won’t Wear Off”) was launched a few years ago, and it was shortly thereafter that I first sampled my mother’s tube of Colorstay Lipcolor in Red. Keeping in mind that both my mom and I have historically tended towards a bit of drugstore brand snobbery when it comes to choosing makeup, I was surprised and intrigued to see Revlon lipsticks discreetly tucked away in every bathroom cupboard or vanity in her house. Too lazy to run upstairs to find my own brand, I sampled Red, and it was instant like at first sight.
I’ve since sampled two other colors in the line, as well as the now defunct Clear (at least I think that was what it was called), which was basically a lip balm claiming to help lock your color in place. Red is definitely my preferred shade, with Scarlet and Fire each a little too pink for my taste. Though I initially enthused at length about Colorstay Lipcolor’s long-lasting qualities and excellent value (at $7.99 for a .06 oz. tube), I must admit it was a passing infatuation. Sure, I still pick up one of my tubes of Red once in a while, but only when I’m feeling a bit of lipstick wanderlust. Time and time again, I always return to my faithful companion, Origins Matte Stick in Rhubarb (see my review).
Colorstay Lipcolor’s Claims Vs. My Actual Experience
~Conditions lips with aloe and vitamin E: I don’t doubt that the product actually contains these ingredients (though I cannot verify an ingredients list at this time), as the legal repercussions of such a false claim would undoubtedly deter a publicly traded, ostensibly reputable company such as Revlon. But do my lips feel conditioned after application? No, not really. The product is actually very matte and fairly dry feeling, which I speculate is part and parcel of the long-lasting color formula. I would never even consider wearing Colorstay Lipcolor without a generous application of a good lip balm as a primer. (I prefer Blistex Lip Balm SPF 10, also reviewed by yours truly.)
~Won’t kiss off (on glass, teeth, or him): While Colorstay Lipcolor is definitely one of the longer lasting lipsticks I’ve tried, it’s certainly not kiss proof or meal proof. If you are very careful while eating (and don’t eat anything with a lot of oil), it may possibly survive a full meal and still look relatively decent. But, personally, I’d still make a trip to the powder room to “freshen up” if I were on a date. It is a lady’s prerogative, after all, isn’t it?
