Hair is one of those things in life that I've never been very good at doing. I brush and spray and mousse and style...and it still looks awful. For some reason I keep thinking if I just get the right curling iron, suddenly my hair will look beautiful. Ahhh well, a girl can dream can't she?
Last week we were in Big Lots and I spotted the Radiance Lighted Styling Iron by Revlon. It looked like the only size that I don't already have...the big guns...the 1 1/2" barrel. The one that I hope will make my unruly bangs curl just right.
Features
This styling iron is a little light show all its own. The whole barrel lights up when plugged in making the little light that shows that it is on really unnecessary, but it is included anyway.
There is a black plastic tip at the top of this iron that does not heat up, so that you can hold it while curling. My only complaint would be that I wish that it were a little bit bigger. I have managed to touch the heated metal a time or two, as this tip goes only 1/2" down the barrel.
This curling iron uses halogen heat technology...and I have to admit that I have no idea what that means. The instructions only say that you see the heat and as I said, this barrel is lit up whenever it is turned on, so I'm assuming that is what they mean. Although the barrel is metal, there are 36 small oval red slots where the heat shines through.
The clip wand has a black plastic tip to prevent burning fingers during use. This wand also has 10 small oval empty slots that allow you to see through to the barrel. There is also a metal safety stand to prevent burning your counter top while in use.
The red handle has the On/Off switch, an On indicator light and a dial with 20 different heat settings. Revlon recommends using the low settings (1 to 5) for fine hair, medium textured hair does best with medium settings (6 to 10). Medium thick hair responds best to settings of medium high heat (10 to 15) and for very coarse thick hair the hottest setting is advised (15 to 20). The directions say that it is more difficult to set the temperature dial to the higher numbers for safety reasons. I see no difference in being able to set it any number. I've tried setting it while turned on and while unplugged and see absolutely no difference in getting it to the 15 to 20 range.
The medium length cord is a tangle proof swivel cord making turning the iron easier and a lot less troublesome than some of the older irons that I still own.
Using the Iron
Radiance Lighted Styling Iron usually heats up rather quickly. Approximately 2 - 3 minutes is all that you need to be ready to use.
It is recommended that you section your hair into 2" area and clamp ends to the curling iron barrel. Hold the cool tip with one hand and roll the curling iron with the other.
Revlon recommends leaving the iron on your hair for 5 to 8 seconds and then slowly unroll, but I must confess that I usually leave it on my hair for a little bit longer than this. I'll have to experiment with shorter times to see if they really 'set' the curl in. The hair should then be allowed to cool before combing or brushing.
When done using be sure to turn the switch to the Off position and then unplug. Because the barrel of this iron is so lit up, I don't think that I'll be forgetting to unplug it, which is a nice safety feature of this iron.
Safety First
All of the safety precautions are written up in the little leaflet that is included with this curling iron.
* Never use while sleeping DUH
* Never drop or insert objects into any opening
* Do not use outdoors
* Do not use near aerosol sprays
* Do not use where oxygen is being used
* The curling iron and clip are hot, do not touch with bare skin.
My Feelings
This curling iron didn't suddenly make my hair look great, I need a cosmetologist for that, but I do love the way that it curls and how quickly it is ready to use.
I was also very pleased that it has a temperature setting so that I can use it at more varying degrees, rather than just low, medium & high.
The price was right on this curling iron as well. I paid $5.99 at Big Lots for it. Not bad at all. I'm sure it is sold wherever other Revlon products are sold.
