Revlon Super Lustrous Shiny Sheers: Well, they got it HALF right anyway….

True Confessions
As I’ve confessed previously, I’m addicted to lipglosses and tinted balms. I prefer the lighter, smoother feel of a sheer gloss or a balm to the often thicker, heavier feel of traditional lipstick, and I also like the added moisture that most glosses and balms provide. Over the years, I feel as if I’ve tried them all, many with great success, and some with less-than-stellar results. So it’s rare I encounter one that I haven’t ventured to try yet….
However, on a recent excursion to my favorite drugstore, my eyes lit up at the sight of the bright orange “Last chance!” pricetags, scattered throughout the cosmetics aisle like festive confetti. OHHH!! What a perfect excuse (as if I need one) to pick up a few fun new items.
As I perused the shelves, a Revlon product caught my eye – it was the Super Lustrous Shiny Sheers lipstick. Hmmm…. A nice array of colors, and at more than half-off, it proved too hard to resist!! I selected a shade called “Sheer Plumdrop,” and added it to my basketful of purchases.
The Basics
Revlon Super Lustrous Shiny Sheers are packaged in a slender black tube, with the classic gold Revlon logo band around it. The top of the cap is clear so as to allow you to get a glimpse of the shade within (however if you have it twisted all the way down, it’s rather hard to see through this tiny peephole, and appears a bit darker due to the black tube).
Here’s what those high-paid marketing people at Revlon have to say about it:
“All of the shine, none of the fuss. Super Lustrous Shiny Sheers provide the high shine and sheer color of a lipgloss with the precise application of a lipstick. Exclusive Liquisilk moisturizers give lips a silky, smooth feel. SPF 15 for added protection. In 10 sheer, shiny shades.”
Is it shiny? Is it sheer?
The shade I chose looked to be a very deep burgundy on the color chart and in the tube, though knowing it’s supposed to be sheer, I wasn’t concerned it would be too dark or too deep. The Shiny Sheers are completely without scent – no fragrance, no odor at all. The color goes on very sheer, appearing more like a lipstain than a gloss or balm (particularly in the deep shade that I chose).
While the color IS indeed sheer, it’s far from shiny. While it’s not a completely matte finish, there is no shine or glossiness to it at all. Again, it looks like a lipstain. And while the product is from their “Super Lustrous” line, there’s really nothing lustrous (or even super) about it.
The texture is pleasant; it feels very similar to a lip balm – not waxy, not greasy, and not slick, just soft and slightly moist. The color does not tend to last particularly long (especially with eating or drinking), but then this is fairly typical for a lightweight tinted balm.
So what’s the verdict?
Overall, while Revlon Super Lustrous Shiny Sheer didn’t completely live up to its name, I do like the product. The color is very flattering, the texture pleasant, and the added bonus of SPF15 makes it an ideal product for daily use in the Sunny Florida climate. If you’re a fan of Neutrogena Moisture Shine Lip Sheers, then this product is worth checking out. However, if you’re wanting something with a bit more shine or glimmer, look elsewhere.
