Fleas Be Gone with Revolution for Cats!

Written: Jun 16, 2012

Pros:Protects agains fleas, heartworm, hook and round worms, and ear mites.
Easy to apply.
Cons:Some veterinarians require an office visit to purchase.
Expensive.
The Bottom Line: Never think your indoor cat will not attract fleas.  It is better to be safe than sorry and I highly recommend Revolution for Cats be applied every month.

I have learned a lesson the hard way.  Indoor cats do get fleas!

Upon moving to a new home, my cat, Jelly, began grooming excessively – or should I say obsessively.  I figured it was the anxiety and stress of losing his companion, Peanut, as well as moving to a new home two weeks later.

I took him to the veterinarian to see what his problem was.  One swipe of a flea comb, and voila!  A live flea appeared!

This surprised me to say the least, for Jelly is mostly white and I am constantly combing through his fur and never spotted a single flea.  Hence, I was lax in applying Revolution to his skin to protect him from fleas.  His last application was in July of last year!

Description:

Revolution for cats is contained in a box of six foil wrapped tubes.  There are different dosages for various weights and I always purchase the product for cats 5.1 – 15 lbs.  Fortunately, Jelly recently lost two pounds, or he would have had to have the stronger formula.

Revolution for cats is marketed by Pfizer and is to be used by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.  You cannot purchase this product in stores.

Revolution is to be applied to the cats skin once a month to protect them against fleas, heartworm, hook worms, roundworms, and ear mites.  However, the product doesn’t protect against tape worm.

There is a cap on the tube which has to be pressed down firmly in order to break the seal.  The tip of the tube should be open.

To apply, the cat’s hair should be parted at the base of the neck and the formula is applied to the skin of the cat.  The tube has to be squeezed several times in the same spot until it is empty. The formula is a thick liquid of which I don’t detect any unpleasant scent.

Included in the box of Revolution, are stickers which you can stick on a calendar to make sure you apply the product every month.

My Experience:

Revolution can be applied to the cat’s skin by a single person; however, I always have my husband assist me when applying on Jelly.  He is a good boy, but you never know when a cat will freak and take off, wasting the expensive product.

A few minutes after application, Jelly begins scratching behind his ear, not reaching the spot where the Revolution was applied.  This is why it is recommended to apply the product to the base of the neck.

None of my cats have ever had a flea, and I suppose Jelly was infected due to one of the feral cats sneeking into my house every now and then to play with my cat’s toys and take a little nap on the couch.  However, he never seemed to itch and chew his hair as he has been doing in the new home.  The previous owners had not had a dog for over ten years, so I know the fleas were not in the house.  He may have gotten them off the patio outside from the grass.  I guess I will never know.

My Take:

I have learned my lesson from this and it has been an expensive experience.  I not only had to take Jelly to the vet twice (once for the diagnosis and once for a flea bath), but also had to have my entire home exterminated.  The flea issue cost me close to $300.00.

In the future, I will place the provided stickers on my calendar and be sure to apply Revolution to Jelly every single month, including the winter months.

Cost:

The cost of a package of 6 doses of Revolution for Cats varies upon which veterinarian’s office at which it is purchased.

Upon contacting several offices today, I couldn’t believe the difference in price which varied from $72.00 to $108.00.  Some of the vets offered an additional one or two doses if a box of six were purchased.  Some vets required an office call before dispensing Revolution for cats and some didn’t.  These prices were quoted for cats that were under 15 lbs. in weight.  I imagine the dosage for a larger cat would cost more.

Ingredient:

Each single-dose tube of Revolution for cats contains 0.75 mL of selamectin.

Thank you for reading my review.
