How can you go wrong with a wine that features a Giant 47 pound rooster on the label and a slogan that says: "Our wines are a tribute to Rex's larger than life personality with big fruit-forward flavors sure to please." The H. R. M. (His Royal Majesty's) Rex-Goliath, on the label is the name of a legendary turn-of- the-century Texas circus attraction, billed as the "World's Largest Rooster." I am so intrigued by creative wine labels, that I will sometime purchase a bottle just based on the label, reasoning that if the company invests that much creativity into making their label, the wine is likely to be well crafted as well. While that's not to say that there aren't some really good wines on the market with plain labels, but so far, I have found a lot of good wines, with intriguing labels, including my latest purchase, H. R. M.Rex-Goliath Shiraz, a hearty red wine with a nice mellow flavor.
The Company
The Hahn family has been making wine in Monterey County since 1980, and in 2002 started the Rex-Goliath label. Head Wine Maker Marty Spate is a native Californian, who also spend time in Australia, learning wine making techniques. His key to wine-making for the Rex-Goliath label is letting the fruit express itself. The Rex-Goliath Winery, located in Woodbridge, California produces several varieties including a Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, California Merlot, California Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and California Zinfandel.
The Taste:
The H.R. M. Rex-Goliath Shiraz features a slightly pungent, floral aroma with a burst of fruit consisting of a tart cherry or raspberry flavor, and a slightly acidic taste. It has a lush, mellow, texture with a strong peppery finish, that doesn't overpower the taste buds, with a lingering aftertaste. It is a semi-dry wine, that is a nice compliment to Indian cuisine, lamb, beef, pork, and cheese.
Description:
Color: Dark Red Complexity: Medium Fragrance: Floral with slightly pungent aroma ABV: 13.5 %
Recommendation:
I found H.R. M. Rex-Goliath Shiraz to be a nice quality Shiraz for the price at @ $5.99 per 750 ml bottle. It received the double gold and Best in Class Awards at the San Francisco International Wine Competition in 2006. It was also named one of the hottest brands of 2003 by Wine Business Monthly Magazine. I recommend it as a nice compliment for casual dining and wine and cheese tastings. It may be a bit too dry for those who enjoy sweeter wines, but the mellow, fruity, flavor and strong tart finish, make this a better than average semi-dry wine, and a nice discovery for my growing list of affordable and flavorful red wines.
