| jps246's Full Review: Rick's |
With the rich history is serving great breakfast food (along with some hardy lunch and dinner meals), Ricks in Franklin, Massachusetts is a great place for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but most especially breakfast.
Ricks is the latest restaurant to be run by Rick, he formerly ran the Clicquot Grille and before that, the Breakfast Club, both of which were in Millis. With this experience, Rick and his staff know how to make breakfast and its really the stand-out menu choice here at his newest restaurant. Not only that, but breakfast is served until 4pm each day, so even if you have forgotten to get up early, you can still get your fill of some great breakfast food.
How do I find Ricks?
Ricks is located in Franklin, which is about 20 miles west of Boston. The restaurant is located in downtown Franklin, which is about 2 miles or so from the Route 140 / Interstate 495 interchange in Franklin. Theres plenty of free parking available (Ricks is actually one of the few downtown Franklin restaurants with its own parking) and its easy to get in and out of Ricks, though during rush hour, traffic can back up in downtown and make it take a bit longer.
Now Im inside, whats it like?
Ricks actually inhabits a former Friendlys restaurant, so when you walk in, you will probably notice that right away with the counter and seating setup. The ice cream freezer is even still there, though nowadays they serve Brighams ice cream instead of Friendlys.
The interior has been redecorated from the walls right down to the tables and seating. I think about the only original thing left from Friendlys is the overall layout of the restaurant.
The restaurant has a variety of seating there are several seats available at a counter area and then there is a mix of 2-person and 4-person booths throughout the rest of the restaurant. The seating can be at a premium, especially during busier times when you might have to wait for a bit for a table to clear.
The wait staff is very attentive and the owner Rick actually works most of the days helping out the servers and checking in with customers to make sure everything is okay. Once you are seated you are generally greeted very quickly by your waiter or waitress who will take your drink order. The wait staff all seems genuinely cheery and pleasant.
Service is generally quick and orderly. They do a good job at pacing meals if youve ordered appetizers or have a salad to start off your meal.
What can I order?
When I think of Ricks, I generally think of breakfast and they definitely have a menu that doesnt disappoint here. The menu includes just about any breakfast item you could imagine in almost any combination. There are over a dozen different combination breakfasts that include my favorite pancakes, eggs, toast, home fries, sausage and bacon, along with others that include french toast or steak and eggs. There are also omelets and breakfast sandwiches.
For lunch and dinner, the menu has a number of different sandwiches and wraps along with a few different baskets and platters. My personal favorites include the CBC or chicken with bacon and cheese sandwich and the open hot faced turkey sandwich. The sandwiches and wraps all come with your choice of fries, salad, or a couple of other different sides. The baskets including a tasty chicken fingers basket come with fries while the platters which include a roast turkey dinner and grilled salmon are a bit bigger than the sandwich meals and generally come with two sides.
Theres also an extensive appetizer menu for those looking to snack or for those who want something before their meal. In addition the menu does include some entrée salads, but really who goes to a place like this to get a salad?
Now if you havent had breakfast or youre just looking for a sweet treat when you are visiting Ricks, he has a number of different deserts including an ice cream puff and an extensive selection of Brighams Ice Cream.
My favorites
Just about any of the breakfast items at Ricks could be considered my favorite. I havent tried anything for breakfast there that I havent ended up liking. My only real complaint with breakfast is about the hash browns, which are a bit overdone for my taste but this is how they have always been made there and at the older restaurants.
I also love the ability to sleep in and maybe do some stuff around the house or yard and still be able to go to Ricks and have breakfast, no matter what day it is.
With lunch its easier the CBC sandwich or the hot turkey that I go for. Both are good meals and depending on whether I want to feel good about what I eat or I want to treat myself Ill either get a side salad with my meal or just go with the fries. The fries at Ricks are a standout too they are like steak fries but not quite so thick and they come out hot and crispy not greasy at all.
And for desert, Id definitely say that the Brighams Ice Cream is a step above Friendlys so if Im in the mood, I dont mind getting a small dish of ice cream.
Prices
Here are where things are really great about Ricks. Expect to spend no more than about $10 a person unless you are getting the entrée meals and in that case maybe about $15 a person. Most of the breakfast items go from about $5 up to $10 and the sandwiches are all around $8 or so.
Final Thoughts
You dont go to Ricks to get wowed you go there to get good food at a decent price, especially breakfast food. And thats what they have - they offer good quality food with low prices and have a staff that is attentive and pleasant.
To me, its one of those restaurants that I will visit over and over since it offers something for everyone, food that I enjoy, and a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere.
