To those of you that are wine drinkers, most likely you are somewhat particular about what type of glass you imbibe from. I know that I have my favorites, and that is what I will normally reach for.
One problem in our house is that my dear husband has a major difficulty with breaking wine glasses. No, it he not throwing them in the fireplace, but in his helpfulness in washing them out, he tends to knock the stem against the sink, and the rest is history.
So, I have two cabinets devoted to glasses. One is full of the everyday things, which are basically mix and match. If they break it isnt a big deal. The other one has my few pieces of Waterford Crystal, and an assortment of better quality wine glasses. My Riedel glasses are in the cabinet.
I was pleased to become familiar with the Riedel brand of glasses. However I found them to be quite expensive until I came across the Vinum (that is the correct spelling) collection that was relatively sensibly priced, and offered many different shapes. This group is machine made, but has all of the delicate features of one of their more expensive line.
Interesting enough, Riedel was the first to offer the correct glass for a specific type of wine. This company dates back to 1756 when Johann Riedel in Bohemia started making these wonderful glasses.
The Vinum Collection consists of an large assortment of differently shaped glasses all designed to enhance the taste and aroma of the wine you are drinking.
The white wine glass that I have is very delicate with a beautiful shape. The glass is 7 1/8 high and will hold 9 7/8 ounces of white wine. It is comfortable to hold in your hand, and although I am not a wine expert, it does feel to be the right glass for white wine. They are pretty, and make a great addition to your dining table or evening cocktail.
I would not recommend putting them in the dishwasher. Although this is one of their less expensive collections, they are still fragile, and should be washed by hand.
These were quite a bargain as I found them on Amazon.com for about $2 a stem, which is about 1/4 of the regular price. I like them so much that I have decided to order more just in case one gets broken.
