If you havent figured out yet that I like chocolate, I will try my best to make that fully apparent. Chocolate Riesen has been around for a long time, but I only discovered it in recent years. In fact, Storck introduced the first Riesen candy in Germany in the 1930s. It was actually Germanys first branded candy. The candy started out as an individually wrapped caramel, progressing through the years until someone at the company had the brilliant idea to wrap the caramel in dark chocolate. In the early 1990s, this delicious candy was expanded to the international market, finally reaching the shores of the United States
.home to the worlds worst chocoholics. The parent company, Storck, is also well-known for other tasty varieties, such as Werthers Original and one of my old favorites, toffifay (or toffifee) . Storck also makes the disgusting Mamba fruit chews which I dont care much for.

Chocolate Riesen provides an interesting combination of tough chewy caramel in a rich dark chocolate covering that dissolves into the caramel as you chew. If you dont eat these candies quick enough (a problem I dont seem to have) the caramel turns to brick. Not literally, but close enough. The pieces become very difficult to chew. I like the dark chocolate (as you can see by my Ghiradelli Dark Chocolate Squares review. The European dark chocolate that they layer over the Chocolate Riesen is a rich chocolate with enough flavor to give you the dark chocolate sensation, while not overwhelming the caramel experience. What you get is a burst of the rich dark chocolate followed by the chewy sweetness of the caramel piece inside. The flavors compliment each other well.
A bag of Chocolate Riesen Chews normally lasts a while around my house. I know I stated that Im a chocoholic, but the rich pieces satisfy my sweet tooth in small amounts. One piece (okay maybe two) take care of the chocolate craving well enough to last me all day. The 11 ounce bag of Chocolate Riesen will set you back several dollars, but it is money well spent. The price is competitive with other chocolates of equal weight.
Nutritional Facts. I sort of feel like it is sac-religious to talk about chocolate in terms of nutrition. If it were nutritional it wouldnt be candy. In my other article, I point to the benefits of chocolate as an antioxidant as well as the benefits of lecithin. Chocolate Riesen has a four piece serving size. I like that, it means that I only consume a half-serving when I imbibe. This serving size weighs in at 170 calories, of which 50 calories come from fat. Thats pretty good stacked up against Ghiradelli Dark Chocolate squares that pack 110 fat calories in a 190 calorie serving. This serving size equals six grams of fat or nine percent of the daily recommended allowance (as if anyone actually stays under 60 grams of fat a day
thats about one cheeseburger at McDonalds). The Ingredients are as follows: Glucose syrup, chocolate (30 percent), sugar cocoa mass, cocoa butter, butterfat, emulsifier, soya lecithin, flavorings, vanillin, sugar, sweetened condensed skimmed milk, vegetable oil, cocoa humectant, sorbitol, whey powder, thickening agent, modified food starch. The chocolate contains cocoa solids (45 percent minimum). Note: Glucose Syrup is synonymous with corn syrup. The ingredient humectant probably refers to a sugar alcohol, like the ingredient sorbitol, which follow it. Humectants are moisturizers, and can also be found in hair products or as a component in anti-static coatings for plastic. Thats sure is appetizing. Dont let the ingredients fool you, the sum of the parts is a quality product!
Chocolate Riesen packs a lot of satisfying flavor into a small chew. The burst of rich chocolate combined with the hard, slowly dissolving caramel, provide an ample cure for the sweet tooth, as well as sating your chocolate cravings. This product is Germanys first branded candy, and I can tell why. It is a quality product with a history as rich as its flavor. I would give Storcks Chocolate Riesen Five stars out of five.
