Pros: Great location, nice decor, very good food, ceremonious presentation.
Cons: Menu is "solid" rather than inspired. Pricey, but good value.

| vickie's Full Review: Ritz-Carlton Dining Room |
I am generally NOT a big fan of hotel dining rooms...regardless of how superior the hotel rates. However, I was very pleasantly surprised by the dining room at the Boston Ritz-Carlton. We selected this restaurant after hearing for well over a year that it was extremely popular among Harvard College students...and not just as a place for visiting parents!
The Ritz-Carlton has been on Boston Common since the late 1920's. The views from the restaurant are of the Common and the Public Garden and they just don't get better than this! Be sure to ask for a table with a view when you reserve, but don't despair if you forget. Table access to the windows in this restaurant is very good, in general. The dining room is very elegant and luxurious without being staid or boring. The decor makes use of glass, lighting and flowers extremely effectively. It is simply a lovely environment in which to spend an evening and to eat a great meal.
I found the service to be very good, although in the past I have heard others complain that it is slow and stiff. I found it professional and personable...responsive yet unobtrusive. The staff was very knowledgeable about the selections. The delivery of the food is this restaurant is worth comment....it is exceptional. If you enjoy the ceremony of watching a fish filleted at the table, or flaming dishes carried through the dining room, or soups graciously ladled from huge silver bowls.....this is the place to dine!
I found the menu to be "solid" as opposed to imaginative. That's OK with me since the preparation was really superior. The fish was fresh, delicate and perfectly seasoned. The rack of lamb was pick and tender. The duck was crispy and not overly sweetened. In general, the food was a pleasure.
If you are not a hotel guest, valet parking is readily available. This is a classic in "old Boston" Back Bay society dining.....sufficiently updated to keep it interesting and timely. It's pricey, but delivers the value.
