I rediscovered fine dining and fine service at this well-known establishment in San Francisco. Initially I was VERY reluctant to go since I had very high expectations of this restaurant. I didn't want to be disappointed by any shortcomings. I was completely surprised and was very happy that I dined at what I can truly say was one of the best meals of my LIFE! Seated by the kitchen, I was even more reluctant to enjoy the meal. I knew that something must be extra-ordinary for my finicky palate for me to be able to even be positive about this experience. Guess what? I didn't notice the kitchen again until it was time to leave.
Starting with the many different types of bread and ending with a great desert, I was truly in heaven. What made the time special were the little additions and extras that were provided. Chocolate in a bottle. Towards the end of the meal and before the desert, all the attendees received a small bottle (smaller than a 35mm film container) with a gold foil cover. Inside was a delicious, rich chocolate. With the consistency of pudding, this little treat was a perfect prelude to the dénouement of the experience.
The meal actually began with a lobster salad topped with caviar. Though not a caviar lover, I devoured this dish and wished for more. I stuck to the fish theme through the main course as well, but the table was punctuated with rabbit, hens and of course sirloin. My choice was Turbot. I had had it once before @ Le Cote Basque in New York and was afraid to try it anywhere else for lack of flavor. It was prepared lightly but with a robust flavor. There were two large portions with some side entrées, which did not crowd the plate. I was sorry to see the meal end.
The price was VERY hefty as well, but well deserved in the class of restaurants to which the Ritz does belong. Although noisy at times, the event was a success both from a business as well as a culinary perspective.
