The good news: You can close the top lid before lowering the basket into the oil. Also, the basket has a small enough mesh that no food (like skinny fries) will escape. The overall design is nice, making an attractive appliance, with easy to use controls.
The most annoying (and dangerous) negative issue is that power cord attaches to the rear of the unit magnetically, and it pulls off very easily - the user manual says to unplug the unit before removing the magnetic end, but in the short time that I was using it, the cord popped off twice; while simply moving the fryer, or simply moving the cord. The cord is understandably beefy, but the cheesy magnetic latch is woefully inadequate. Also, the line and neutral contacts can be easily touched while the magnetic end is free, which makes me wonder how in the world this appliance ever got a UL rating.
But the reason why I'm returning this bad boy tomorrow is because when I first filled and operated it, the Ready light came on well short of the 375 degree setting, and the unit simply stopped heating. I turned it off and let it cool down, then plugged it back in, but the Ready light came on immediately, and the heating element never came on.
