Once again the challenges of using the pot with oil, compare to using the safety fryer. I have oil burn spots on my face from all the years of deep frying in the old pot. You know when the oil pop!!!!!!! ouch again.
I have gone and shopped for a fryers, mini one and they were so poorly made. I could not fine one that I liked that was made strong, mesh strainer for everyday use or just once in a while frying.
As I was stopping this past holiday, I was going through my favorite Walmart Store, walked towards the household appliances and this deep fryer caught my eye. I picked it up and started to read the box ( one was on display too). View window, filter cover, frying basket removable oil reservoir, lid release button, timer knob, power indicator light, ready indicator light, temperature lever, immersion heating element, removable power strip, sure release break away cordset, main housing, lid, dishwasher safe for cleaning that the unit is easy to seperate the parts, easy to clean.
Very strongly made and not that cheap mesh basket(strainer) strong that could hold that deep frying of chicken that we all love.
Now replacing and cleaning Filters:
Form white grease filter many be washed in hot soapy water. Air dry:
Charcoal filter do not wash, just replace every 3 months or after you use the fryer 12 times. I guess you have to keep count.
Clean the inside of cover with damp soapy sponge. Rinse and dry thoroughy. For replacement charcoal odor or grease filter, can be order through rival at www.rivalproducts.com or by mail check for $ 7.99 plus $ 6.00 shipping and handling to: Rival po.box 769, milford, ma 01757-0769.
I wanted to add that this is a very costly amount to pay to replace the filters and charcoal and might not sound to good of a product if you have to pay so much to replace idems to operate it. I have to look into Small Appliance stores that sell parts and most likely you will find in your phone book and have one local that you can go and get the parts there instead of going through the website or by mail.
Repair stops for small appliances that repair Rival products should carry the filters. I will look into and add in my update.
Do not seasoned or flavored oil such as walnut, olive, lard or drippings because they have a low smoke point. Oil to use are blended vegetable oil, pure corn oil, sunflower, soybean, or grape seed oil (canola oil) these oils have a high smoke point. Peanut oil is not recommended because impacts the flavor.
High heat, water and burnt food particles break down the oil's smoke point.
Replace oil if you notice:
Excessive smoking at normal temperatures
Strong oil discoloration
A rancid smell
Excessive forming around the frying food
Oil darkens with use the oil food molecules burn when subjected to high prolonged heat.
When frying foods such as fish or chicken use the oil once.
Do not filter oil over to reuse. Storing the oil in the refrigerator may extend the life of the oil, this should not be done ever. This process of chilling the oil and then burning the oil to room temperature causes excessive splattering furing the heat up.
Storing the covered oil in a cool dark place, for up to three months. ( remember to check oil when you use for color, smell, or excessive foaming. Throw out if there is signs of all the above.
This unit has a warranty for one year from the day of purchase.
Cooking:
When starting let unit reheat 7-10 minutes. This will get the heat to desired temperature. Re4ady light will cycle on/off during frying as temperature fluctuates due to food load.
Types of foods cooking: temperatures and time of cooking
Chicken strips 375 F. 5-8 minutes
Chicken pieces, bone-in 375 F. 15-20 minutes
Fish, battered 340 F. 8-10 minutes
French fries, frozen 375F. 3-5 minutes
F375F. 3-5 minutes

When frying frozen food if iced rub off lose as this can make the temperature of oil cool down. Pre-cooked frozen food cooks faster and does not come out oily.
